Other Motorcycle: I'd love an old Vincent
I always use the high beam during sunlight- that is pretty bright!

For the most part there's little value in running without the headlight on. The alternator will generate a fixed amount of electrical energy depending on engine rpm and whatever isn't used by the lights, ignition, etc., will simply be lost at heat at the rectifier. Running without the headlight on will only mean that the rectifier has to handle the additional heat load and chances are that won't add to it's service life.

On the other hand, a low battery will charge better and if you're running electric clothes there will be more power for that, if the headlight is off.

If you have to have a switch to turn off the headlight connect it through the low beam hot wire. That way if you need lights in a hurry, say as a warning to someone who might pull out in front of you, all you will need to do is toggle on the high beam.

I have a strong memory of the early 1980's of being booked by the police in Spain for riding in daylight with my headlight on! The theory behind that law, and one I agree with, is that in very bright- harsh- sunny conditions that a dark profile is easier to spot than a headlight.

Let the rider decide whats good for him

The electrical system has a relay that cuts out the headlight during the time the starter is engaged.
