Remembering to turn them off gets more difficult when the garage contains one bike with self cancelling, and another without. Having ridden Beemers since 1985, nearly all of them came with self cancelling signals. That got me into a really bad habit of depending on the self cancelling switch.
Unlike the device Larry described, I think the factory systems sense whether the bike is in motion. If sitting still, factory systems don't self-cancel. Requires a combination of motion (maybe # of wheel rotations?) before they time out. That'd be a nice feature on the aftermarket systems.
I agree .... leaving turn signals on is very dangerous, an open invitation for a car (or another motorcycle) to pull out directly in front of you at a cross street ..... but officer, he had his signal on to turn .....
