I made an inexpensive signal beeper from a couple of diodes and a piezo beeper from RadioShack and mounted them in a small plastic project box on the windshield bracket of my wife's Rebel. It greatly reduced he tendency to leave the signals on and is just loud enough for cars around/beside you to hear your intentions to turn. Her Honda had spare bullet connectors for the front signals so I tapped the circuits easily there. I'm not sure what the wiring is like on the Bonnie, I'm sure I'll learn quickly when I add my running light conversion.
I'd have as much luck putting together diodes and a pizza electric thing as I would winning the Olympic Decathlon.

Remembering to turn them off gets more difficult when the garage contains one bike with self cancelling, and another without. Having ridden Beemers since 1985, nearly all of them came with self cancelling signals. That got me into a really bad habit of depending on the self cancelling switch.

Unlike the device Larry described, I think the factory systems sense whether the bike is in motion. If sitting still, factory systems don't self-cancel. Requires a combination of motion (maybe # of wheel rotations?) before they time out. That'd be a nice feature on the aftermarket systems.

I agree .... leaving turn signals on is very dangerous, an open invitation for a car (or another motorcycle) to pull out directly in front of you at a cross street ..... but officer, he had his signal on to turn .....

Interesting post, Ohio. I have had two recent BMW GS's - 1100 and 1150. Neither had self canceling signals.

In fact, the cancel button which was a push UP with your thumb was such a PITA, that it dissuaded me from ever using the electric signals.

I think that factory self canceling signals do use some combination of time and movement or maybe wheel turn count only. I'd think wheel turn count the way to go if I were designing it.
