I was cruising along in 4th gear@113 MPH when I decided to open up the throttle all the way.
I got to about 8359 RPM@139 MPH, and knowing that the rev limiter was going to kick in at any second to make me shift to 5th gear, I wondered what you people thought of clutch less shifting?
When I drive a car with manual transmission, other than starting out, I rarely use the clutch for up or down shifting. I tried the same with my Speedy and it seems that it does not like it, so I use the clutch.
In race cars& motorcycles, after leaving the pits, they never use the clutch and the cars use the same type of transmission as a motorcycle:i.e. you cannot go from 1st to 3rd gear without going through 2nd gear, unlike a street car where you can shift from 1st to 4th if you want)
(Indy cars, and most endurance racing sports cars)
I wondered if you all had any thoughts on clutch less up-shifting when hitting the limiter, or even just carefully up and down-shifting??
Thank you in advance!! :-D

mine does not shift (up) very well without the clutch. I must say however that I have not tried to find the rev limiter in 4th gear either.

do you have a speedometer upgrade? I can't tell if I am really going super sonic or not. ( except I can no longer hear my exhaust) We should race sometime!

I have the adjustable speedometer from whoareyoubsing.com It comes in handy in order to tell bs stories about how fast my speedy goes LOL.
When I go supersonic I just think of Chuck Yeager and scream "Glamerous Glennis" and if I can't hear myself scream I know I am at supersonic.

I can truthfully say that I change into 5th at speedo reading 140 and wind it up to speedo 180 before I run out of numbers.....

I know that unless you don't do it right with an automobile tranny, you can grind up the gears. Also, with a tranny on a racing car they jam them into the next gear (up or down) and the only time I have ever heard any noise from the transmission is when the driver puts it into gear when stopped, it kind of grinds and then she/he gets it into gear and immediately goes. ("She" is for Danica, Sarah and Milka on Sunday) On an oval they are constantly shifting from 5th to 6th and sometimes even to 7th (the save gas gear). The difference between 5th and 6th at Indy for example is 200 to 400 RPM and between 6th and 7th is another 200 to 300 rpm but when in the conserve fuel mode 300 RPM is a big deal over time. So anyhow, to sum up, I bet the gears in my Triumph, especially up shifting, can take a lot of abuse and if one is careful and does not abuse them, it won't hurt. I get tired of clutching in the city on the way to work and with the torque I have with my 790cc motor, I can usually stay in 3rd unless I leave late as I did today and have to drive with the some of the 4 wheel crowd a little too close than I like to. I'll try it after work and this weekend and report back on Monday.
THREE DAYS OFF!!!!!!!!!
:-D
