Hi
I've got a 1982 T140 (the oil in frame one) that I am trying to get going. Basically it's been sat in a garage for 16 years.

So after a bit of cleaning up I put a battery in it and some fresh leaded fuel and tried firing it up just to see if it would start. It only started on one cylinder and then loads of oil started comin from the airbox. On further inspection it seems that the cylinder that was running was blowing oil back through the carb, and there was a lot of it! :???:

So before I start ripping the engine to bits :hammer: has anyone got any clues what's gone wrong. Oh and just so you know it is my dads bike and occaisionally (every couple of years!) he would turn the engine over with the kick start but didn't fire it up.

Cheers

Mark

Welcome Mark. You may have better luck getting your answer in the vintage/veteran section under the classics and cruisers forum to your left. :???:

Cheers for that, I assumed it was the valve guides leaking but didn't fancy stripping the head down.

Tried again today, kicked it over a lot without the sparks and after a while fired it up again with the same result

The oil is coming out of the airbox breather and the suction from the carb makes loads of oil come out.

I tried draining the oil out of the bike and then kicking it over again without the plugs in to try and clear it.

Anyway the bike fires up easily enough (for a trumpet  ) and I ran it with the airbox off and a tube connected from the breather to a catch bottle. There doesn't seem to be anysign of the oil drying up?? Seeing as there is only about a litre of oil in the bike anyway I can only assume there is an internal leak, Could this be the oil pump?

The bike has only done 8000 miles before it was laid up so I can't see it being a major mechanical fault.

Cheers

Mark

I agree with goin- commando,
Sounds pretty probable that someone overfilled the oil, either by accident, because the oil has slipped by the pump and the level appeared low or intentionally to protect it due to storage. Also, if the petcock was left on you may have fuel contamination in your oil. Check your plugs. Especially the non-firing cylinder.
Sounds like you need an oil change anyhow. Check vents and lines are clear. Drain and change. This maybe all that is required.

Fixed it!

Ran the engine with the oil filler off and a tube conected to the breather back to it. Loads of oil went back and I had to switch it off when it got to the top of the frame.

In the end I emptied 6 pints of oil out of the bike which is supposed to only have 2!!! Wait till I see me Dad!!!!!

Anyway went for a quick run out on it this afternoon and it goes alright!

Thanks for the help.

Mark
