You've been reading my old posts haven't you ?! :-D Ok, heres the deal. Iridiums are a plug made from a metal of the same name which is found in meteorites. yes, meteorites ! NGK is just one of the companies that makes iridiums, tho theres also the consideration of design. I have only used the NGK so thats all i can speak to.
Side gapping is a mod that YOU do to any plug, iridium or not. Seems to increase torque quite a bit for a lot of people. It's simply cutting the ground electrode (the little finger thingy) shorter so that it does NOT cover the center electrode. (Or that little round thing) Do a google search for "side gapped" and you'll find pictures to see where you cut it.
I have done this to both standard NGK plugs and the iridium version. What i find is that the standard plugs when side gapped give better power than the iridiums by a small amount. However, the reason i use iridiums that i side gap instead of standards is this. When i side gapped standard plugs they gave me a bit more torque than a side gapped iridium, but they also wore down so fast that the gaps would change within as little as 500-1000 miles. Then the performance would drop off because of the enlarged gap which at times caused fouling and missing. You could pull them and re-gap then and clean em and then they'd be fine again. However, not wanting to do that every few hundred or 1000 mile i tried side gapping a set of iridiums because iridium is a metal that is used because it wears far far slower. So i figured if i side gapped a set of iridiums i wouldn't have to keep maintaining them. Sure enough i haven't had to in the last few thousand mile. I get a tad bit less torque than i did with the standard plugs, but it's well worth the lack of constant maintenance.
As for the boost you get, thats subjective i suppose. But a lot of people here who tried it, in fact the majority, said they felt a considerable boost. Very few felt little or nothing. I find it makes a very considerable difference in what i perceive as torque. I've done A/B tests and there was no doubt. Going back to non gapped plugs leaves me feeling like the bike is sick. it really helps a lot IMO. If you want to try it you may want to side gap your stock plugs and see what you think before doing it to a $20 set of iridiums, If for some reason you don't like it you can get a new set of standards for about $4.

I bought a set of NGK's for the kawasaki at a metric bike shop, never tried anywhere else ,is there an anywhere else? From reading your post,I'm guessing that this will be a go; on my set-up. By the way.....yes , I've read from way back. Incidentally , I took your advice on the carb-overhaul , 1 shim , didn't even have to tweak the mixture screws. I left them at 3T. Anyway Daz,I'm always up for grabbing the road, I like Torque. 8-)

You can get them many places. Even auto parts stores will often have the correct NGK model for our bikes. The Iridium version if you ever buy those is DPR8EIX9. They may be a bit harder to find, just call some bike shops of buy online. I got a set at the local Kawasaki dealer once, and another at a local independent dirt bike shop.

Got it. wrote it down. Our stock plug($4.00) # NGKDPA8EA-9...gap 0.8 to 0.9 mm .....not modified. I'll look into google to see how to do it since the tang won't be right over the electrode.Confirming ......Irridium for our model bike is ($20.00)#NGK.....DPR8EIX9....side gap ;45 degree angle, gap check, for side gapping;standard gapping from .0315-.(.8mm) (.035)9mm.. I wonder which is preferred?Read many posts on side gapping and gapping . Ol' veteran bikers say to use a matchbook which is .032 (by the way which is cool)and some posts by many who think the world is still flat. :hammer:
