I know this is a perennial favourite but I have followed the threads and there doesn't seem to be a conclusive answer on this one. Everyone seems to agree that these beasts are not morning people. My new bonnie takes at least 15 pushes of the starter before it catches unless it's over 20 outside in which case it starts right away. I have tried with no choke, half choke etc. but nothing seems to do the trick. Any ideas ? Once she's warm, no problem but getting her started is like slow flirtation and then some. is there a technical fix ?

Canada uses celsius, so 20 C = 68 F. Honestly Wradford, I can see no reason why an 07 Bonnie should be that hard to start. Maybe an 01 or 02, but not an 07. I have an 05 T100, and from day one, she has started on the first push of the starter, EXCEPT for the first start of the season, when it takes two tries to start her up. If you've got an 07, you've got the same 865cc engine as mine. From bone stock when I picked her up through two years of mods, I've had no starting problems. Granted, I live in Tennessee, but I'm in the mountains, and it does get chilly here. The only starting difference I've noted that is related to temperature is that I only use half choke when it's above 85F/30C.

If you are having to push the ignition 15 times to start the bike, something is wrong, probably either in the carburetion or the electrical system. This kind of problem can't be explained by the cold-blooded Bonnie idea. Has your dealer been over this bike? When you repeatedly try to start the bike, how long do you wait between tries. You should let it rest approximately 8-10 seconds between ignition attempts. What kind of shape is your battery in?

Have you looked to make sure the choke circuit seems to be working, ie, when you pull on the choke knob, can you actually see movement or has the enriching mechanism perhaps been loosened. This sounds like a bike trying to start without choke. Given that my bike will easily start on half choke when it's really warm, it may be that your bike's enriching circuit is somehow out of whack and that above 20 it's managing essentially to start with little to no choke.

Is the problem as discreet as you seem to be saying, in other words, if it's over 20 it starts on the first push of the ignition and if it's under 20, it takes 15+ tries, or is it more variable?

Honestly, your Bonnie should work better than this, and I'm guessing that the correct adjustment(s) will get it right.

Good advice, that.

Also, what is a "push?" I am assuming that you aren't just jabbing at the starter button. You have to let it turn over for a few seconds before you give up. You have to have it on full "choke," and don't touch the throttle at all; and you have to be sure that there is fuel in the carbs and that the lines aren't plugged with build junk. If all that is OK I'd be getting the bike to the dealer. "It ain't natural."

Good luck,

Monte :-D

If you are starting a COLD engine ALWAYS use full choke then after a minute of idle and or when you hear the RPM pick up put it on half way choke then a short time later when ready to ride push in the chocke...with a hot engine NEVER use the choke at all... these bikes are one of the easiest starting bikes I have had and I want to mention that I still notice how SMOOTH it shifts...hondas don't even shift as smooth...your bike will be ok with this procedure OR you need a tuneup...

My 2007 Bonneville is difficult to start. By the word "difficult" I mean - I would expect it to start more easily than this.

With full choke, no throttle - the bike will start after holding down the starter for a solid 4-5 seconds. That's too long for the starter to be grinding without starting the bike.

Another thing I don't agree with is that our bonnies are hard starting. If tuned well should start first time. last winter we had a snow storm with the snow lasting for 2 week before melting(the worst snow for 40 years on the coast) I went out a few times to start my girl just to see what the story was, and I swear she started before my thumb hit the start button :-D . No throttle ,Choke and if she knows she is still your number 1 love she will repay with a instant start.

Put the battery into my 02 Bonnie yesterday, temps around 40F.
Had to take off the side cover and put a rag into the air intake to get it fired up.
Bike has the rubber bellmouth, Unifilter and Tors and is obviously on the lean side. I have 42 pilots + Thruxton needles and some larger mains to put in.

Interested to know if you guys ride every day or less regularly. Also if you store you bike inside or out. And the manner in which you bike was run in...following the factory recommendation or that of some of our fellow forum members?
