Just took delivery of my new Garmin Zumo 550 GPS. Sweetest GPS around IMHO. Comes with a suction bracket and power cable for the car, and another multi-mount bracket and power cable to fit to the bike.

I really want to do this right the first time and don't want to risk frying anything! The power cable is fuse protected, and has a positive and negative lead.

I don't want to wire directly onto the battery and would rather have a live cable only when the key is set to on/run position.

Any ideas as to the best pickup for the positive cable? I'll connect negative directly to the battery.

Thanx in advance to all the Guru's for lending a hand :smug:

Theres a couple of unused connectors under the gas tank. These are for an alarm and some other add on.
Check with a tester or light bulb to find out which one gets power with ignition on, and there you go.
IMHO, you may as well get a connector and get ground there too, tho you can do it the other way

I have the Zumo also...but would not recommend wiring it to the key.....If you stop for gas or a smoke you lose power and if you're not paying attention, the unit will power down and you gotta re-boot.......

Wire it directly to the battery with a switch of some sort (such as a toggle switch) for you to use when you want it powered up. I have satellite radio and did the same thing. Put the toggle by the other accessory lights on the tank. Works great. I have it on a disconnecting line so that when removing the tank it easily disconnects.
