Help I had my bike for about six months bought it in the winter so did not really get to ride it until now. i changed the oil plugs bike was running great. starts right up and pick up through the gears was fine. one day go to start the bike and it felt like it was choking gave it gas and it would sputter. figured it was the air filter so i went and put a new one in old one looked real bad. start the bike and it idles fine when cold take around the block no problem once the bike warms up it dies at a light. start it and will run as long as i am giving it gas but after that the bike will start to sputter again even at full throttle. any help would be appreciated can it be the gas filter and where is it located.

Sure sounds like it is starving for fuel or air. The only fuel filters I've seen are "inline", so start from the petcock and work back. If it has one, it is likely under the tank.

There's a small in-line screen (actually inside the fuel line) where it "T's" off to the carbs. Follow the line as suggested by davidc down towards the engine.
Also check your tank vent hose and make sure it's not kinked (see if the problem goes away when you vent the tank filler cap while it's running).

Check that all four vacuum caps (aka squirrel condoms) are in place on your intake manifold and carbs.

Part of your problem could be the gas. Gas goes bad in two weeks.. If the gas in your tank has been there since December, there's a good change it's not "combusting" as it's supposed to.

The gasoline has been in the ground for millions of years! :-D

It might help to toss in an ounce or two of carb/fuel injector cleaner and a fill up with "fresh" gasoline. It doesn't cost much and won't do any harm. This has helped when my little Honda was sputtering after sitting for months.

Also try the "loosen the filler cap" trick to diagnose vent problems.

And don't give it ANY throttle when you start it. That kills it immediately.

I had this problem once. I simply turned into the nearest petrol station and refueled. LOL. Forgive me it's Friday night in Australia and there is nothing of interest on TV.

it's not the gas what i meant was once the weather was warmer i rode the bike more. there is fresh gas in the tank and i just tuned it up plug oil oil filter and air. i took it for a ride and it ran fine. started to stall and i removed the gas gap that seemed to work but the problem came back wondering if it could be a electrical problem. does any one know how to test the coil with a ohm meter.

i finally figured it out I bought a manual and went and did some test with a ohm meter. Founded out the wires were weak and the coil was bad replaced both and the bike is running great. i also rebuilt the carbs and replaced the the jet to 40 with one shim. what a difference.
