Well, there certainly is the "tough look"...such as wearing little to no protective gear. I guess it's illegal to wear a full face helmet if you ride a harley. Alot of good that will do when your face smashes the pavement. Yes, it's a choice, but more a "look at me" type of thing IMO...
(Wait, this isn't the biker hang out forum!?....this thread will be locked for sure.) RUN! :assim:

HD makes some fine machines. That doesn't mean you have to buy into the whole poser charade. Enjoy the machine on your own terms and you'll be happy.

Be cool now, KingStreetRat, you ride a Bonnie. Give full attention to your ride, perfect revs going into the line and acceleration out of the turn. You and the machine are in the groove... dig it.dig it

And your point is.. ? if you want to sell the bike, sell it.. It's actually a pretty nice ride. Maybe it's you who's trying to a bit too hard to fit in.
Just ride the bike and be damned with all the poser Bovine Scatology. Or sell it...

There is no reason you have to JOIN the usual HD scene.
I glory in being completely different, I mostly ride a little old inexpensive bike (69 Daytona) set up for street and dirt.
I pull up at the biker bar (good draft beer in frosted mugs cheap) and park front wheel in, opposite of ALL the other
100 harleys parked facing out, have something like a polo shirt and jeans on, and sneakers, glasses and whatever helmet suites the weather, the bike can have twigs hanging off from the woods riding, and is usually dirty.
The usual hard core suspects are out there polishing their chrome, and drinking diet beer...and everything they have on has a HD label on it.
They get into heated arguments about how much they pay to have the dealer adjust the belt drive or change the oil...
They are mostly harmless, but you have to keep on your toes, as they often crash.
Nothing against the bikes, an old 883 would make a fair street and dirt bike if set up well, the full dress bikes sure would be nice for a cross country trip.
You should just get the bike YOU want, and do what YOU want to do with it, and wear what YOU want to wear, and not give to sh2ts about what others think.
I would only respect the opinion of someone I respect.
I have more respect for a person who does all their own work on a bike, and rides with skill. They know their bike, and how to ride it.
Many of the other people just have lots of money to spend.
People don't seem to understand you enjoy something by building/fixing it, not by paying for it.
The greater the effort put into something, the greater the reward you get out of it.

i am freakin sick and tired of "real bikers" constanly crapping on me for not doing my own work. so i dont own wrenches and somehow that makes me some kinda loser. kiss my %** and yes sometimes i wear shoes and i have an overpriced shoei. BUT i can build a freakin house, i am financial wizard my wife and I get along excellantly and i dont hate my life. Mechanics is messy and the tools are expensive. plus i like to visit my dealer, they are nice and its is good to sit around on my dream bikes while i wait for them to do my oil. so enuff with they dont do their own work. okay - you harp about hd snobs. how about mechanic snobs. stop putting people down.

Hey Convict - I agree with you, but I also agree with bgaz.
Do whatever floats yor boat, and don't worry about what others think. That's the beauty of a bike without a poseur image - yet.
Let's keep it that way!
Bikes are meant to be ridden.... hard!

Convict. There is a satisfaction in knowing your own bike in a way you can never have unless you work on it and tune it yourself. Bgaz is not attacking you personally; he's merely pointing out the value of competency.
And tools aren't expensive at all; in fact by forgoing a couple of trips to the dealers mechanic you can pay for all of the tools you would ever need to work on your own bike. Is it messy; sure, but so are a lot of very enjoyable activities.

Maybe I struck a nerve here?
I just said that is what I respect, I have NO respect for people with lots of money, more suspicions then respect.
Others may have no respect for me, I got a cheap little bike and not a lot of money. I am fine with that.
I actually wear it as a badge of honor!
I suspect I am in the minority, at least in the US where money is the big thing.
I enjoy wrenching on everything, from the cars, bikes, plumbing, electrical work, electronics, I build my own ham radio equipment, fix almost everything, thats what I am into.
If I won millions of dollars, I would give most of it away and use the rest to buy more bikes to restore, and more tools!
A nice powder coat setup would be real nice....
Good welding equipment...a spray booth....a big garage!
