I changed oil and filter in my Bonnie Black last weekend. I had some oil left over that I bought for another bike. Brad Penn brand 20W-50 partial synthetic racing oil. I used it for the oil change. It's supposed to be pretty good stuff, API SH. Ever since the oil change, there seems to be a little more engine noise than before. I may just be paranoid, but is there anything about this oil I should know about?

Does the Brad Penn meet JASO MA? Nothing on their website says it does. Triumph specifies JASO MA for the gearbox and clutch. If the can says JASO MA you probably are OK. If not, you are on your own.

I've read before on this site that there's more engine/tranny noise, notchier shifting etc. with anything other than the Triumph spec'd Mobil 1 full syn. I can't vouch for this myself since that's all I've ever used, but I've read comments to that effect from time to time. I seriously doubt other equally spec'd oils are inferior in terms of protection, but there may be something else going on besides paranoia.

I looked up up JASO MA on the internet just now and the motorcycleinfo.com oil page said that that classification is equivalent to the API SH, which the Brad Penn oil is. I just don't know. This is all new stuff for me. I appreciate the input.
The worst case scenario is buying new oil and just changing that. I'm sure the new filter is fine.

I wouldn't get too twiterpated just yet. I went to the site and read the specs. They are excellent. But they are silent on whether the additives are "energy conserving." If they are they MAY, not will, may, cause clutch slippage. Some do not.
Since it is a racing oil the chances are that they do not add energy conserving additives. If you are worried, call them and ask.
Chances are it is fine. If the clutch starts slipping, change it.
We tend to be far too paranoid about oil, IMHO.

JASO MA oils meet the API SE spec (not necessarily SH spec) but not all API oils meet the JASO MA spec.
To meet the JASO MA spec, the oil must first meet the API spec but also has to meet the additional high friction requirement needed for a modern motorcycle wet clutch and gearbox. To meet the JASO MA spec, the oil has to have additional testing beyond API to demonstrate the friction requirements (plus other requirements) have been met. If the oil doesn't say JASO MA, it might still be OK, but you are the one who gets to do that testing. "A little more engine noise than before" is just part of the test results.

Sorry, but raproe's second post has made me fully twiterpated. My Bonnie's just too precious to take a chance. Tried to question Brad Penn about specifications. No results. Apparently, one guy with their oil already in his bike isn't top priority.
The closest Auto Zone has the recommended Mobile 1 oil and I'm going to switch. I can use the drained Brad Penn racing oil in my old 8N tractor.

be careful... I think the "proper" Mobil 1 is only avail through Tri dealers (and the net). Make sure it meets the spec per raproe.

Well, you just trumped all the advice anyone can offer. Bikes are to be fun. And if you are worried then you aren't having any fun. So dump the stuff and get on with your life.
Happy riding,
Monte

Just ride it. The oil's fine, don't waste it. If the clutch slips, then change the oil, otherwise put in "the right stuff" or whatever you think is good at your next oil change.
