Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions about the America. I have been thinking about getting one for a long time.

1. How reliable has it been for you. How many miles do you have on yours?

2. Can the footpegs be moved closer for us short legged guys?

3. How is it two up for weekend trips?

4. Does it have enough power to survive tough traffic such as LA?

Thanks as always I appreciate the information from all of you.

Dave

1. How reliable has it been for you. How many miles do you have on yours?

I only have about 12k on it, but from reading here 2 years and riding one, everything points to the fact these bikes are very reliable. In fact, triumph engineered them with that in mind. Short stroke low compression motor that never goes where other motors go. Never works hard. I think they're extremely reliable. I see very few issues at this or any other forum regarding them aside from a few small things that have mostly since been rectified. My advice would be don't even worry about this subject. It's just not a problem.

2. Can the footpegs be moved closer for us short legged guys?

No, not unless you buy the Rask relocation set which is very expensive. It's about $400 and moves them back 4" i believe. Not sure how good they are and i have yet to see anyone buy it. So i'd be skeptical.

3. How is it two up for weekend trips?

Don't know

4. Does it have enough power to survive tough traffic such as LA?

Easily. I live there and use it in everything from rush hour in the big city to mountain roads. Plenty of torque for big city driving which is what you need for that. A great and fun round' town bike.

I had an 02 America, very nice bike, looked good, sounded good (with TOR pipes) and always got compliments.

I found it lacking power though especially for two up riding.

For pep and go the America is lacking when compared to the classic Triples. :hammer:

32,000 miles. Virtually no problems. Just keep up the maintainence.

Get the floorboards. I have a 27 1/2 inch inseam.

Power is a subjective thing. I can cruise all day at 90 but I really enjoy 60-70mph. If the old lady is 300 pounds then you might have a problem with two up. Buy her her own bike! If she is 130-150 and you are about the same you will do just fine. The '07 have the 865 motor so there is a lot more tourque in the bottom end. That being the case, the motor will handle the 300 pound old lady but you might have to install air shocks!

It has enough power for you to scare the hell out of yourself if you don't have any sense!

It is without question one fine machine.

I have 18000 in my 04 America and have had 0 troubles. The tires lasted to 16000, and at that time new chain and sprockets, and plugs. My paint is still perfect, and the bike is beautiful.

I have been on several long trips, some 4 day weekends with the wife, 2 10 day trips in the mountains. As with any bike these days a better seat is a must for touring

As far as performance, it will work just fine stock, but some minor mods like pipes, jets and air filter will free it up a bit and give better mileage. They really respond well upgrades.
On the road, 2up and loaded I consistently get just over 40mpg, with cruising speeds in the 70s and 80s. Mine has the 790 motor, the new 865 is supposed to have a bit more grunt.

As far as power I can run just fine with any big cruiser on the road, and can definately out manuever the big boys in traffic.
And when stopping for gas or whatever, no matter how many bikes I'm with, mine gets all the attention.

And for the pegs, installing a saddlemen seat will move you forward about 1 to 2 inches, and stirup pegs or floorboards will prbably shorten up your reach to the pegs sufficently.

Very reliable bike.Over 30,500 miles now.Oh excuse me I have the Speedmaster.Almost the same bike, dual disc and different wheels. Mines the 05 so it's 865cc. Do a few mods and you should be very happy. For example most do the exhaust and carb, filter and jetting. This usually gives these bikes a bit more power.Had garbage in the fuel tank once so I had to clean out the fuel bung. Normal maintenance, tires, chain, and I just did all the brake pads.Good luck enjoy your new Triumph! Be different don't by the Hog everybody wants you to. There's not a Triumph on every corner like a Harley,or a Honda. :-D
