I know the stock exhaust is awfully quite so mechanical noises are heard more easily but seems to be a LOT of mechanical clatter from the engine, especially from right side at idle and just at idle. Bike runs great and no noises at all above idle (Wish I’d left the TORS on ) Dealer says its normal. True ???????

True +1, only engine I EVER want to sound as quiet as a stock Bonneville is a generator. Without pipes you will hear every valve open and close, the slightest piston slap will convince you your rods are about to poke through the case and the clutch chatter will seem to get louder and louder as you listen more attentively. Cure = pipes. It is a motorcycle after all.

as a green noobie to the air cooled twin - i went more than a bit wobbly over the noises, only to be reassured by the cool heads on this forum that all was ok.

had the 10k service today, and the mechanic said it was one of the quiter bonnies he sees, thats even with the obligatory 'shaken can o' bolts' noises coming from the under tank area. now i just concentrate on the staintunes note whilst keeping the knees pressed against the tank to block the sound. but seriously, the noises are becoming more familiar and sound reassuring and distinctive now.........almost.....

Yep... The day I picked it up my wife was with me. The dealer had already installed TORs on the bike and at the time it seemed a bit too loud (Well, she thought they were)so I had him reinstall the stock mufflers BIG MISTAKE... Gonna have to do something about this. But overall LOVE the bike , man is it different from my ST1300.

Ride it a while with the stock mufflers. You may come to like the quiet. Most here don't. I do. My neighbors do.

If you really want the tors back now, one thing you might check with the dealer is if he rejetted for the tors. If he did you might be a little rich with the stock mufflers, which will adversely affect your mileage, and, you could argue, have other negative implications.

In that case, if he did rejet for the tors, (he should have), and if he doesn't want to rejet back to stock jets for the stock mufflers, he might be willing to swap back for the tors to save the time and labor to rejet your bike back to original.

Even with Norman Hyde Classic silencers and earplugs, I still hear engine noises. But after years with a boring in-line four cylinder Japanese engine, it's music.

Here's what you do boy...

- put the TOR's back on
- put earplugs in
- get out on the highway and run the engine at 6000rpm in 5th gear

Won't hear anything but the sweet sound of blood in your ears!!
