I'm curious as to who's for or against these things...

I've seen a handful of guys without 'em... and I'm thinking I might go the same route. I ripped mine off the other day as I was taking the rear wheel of mah bike... and when I was piecing her back together, I neglected to tack the guard back on.

Anybody got a reasonable argument against leaving it off?

Might cause serious damage ie. clothing getting caught up or worse still feet/boot laces getting caught up with the chain

Thank God its Friday :-g :-g :-g :-g

Hmm I ride with lace boots, I tuck them in though. I would leave it on but check the bolts that hold it down every 200 miles or so.

Wasn't there a famous female movie star, Isadora Duncan strangled by her scarf getting caught in a chain or driveshaft in the 20s? I had a primary chain snap on my Rudge Ulster while racing and it came right thru the chaincase and went thru my leathers and cut my leg pretty good. Seems the risk/reward doesn't warrant removal, especially if you drive 2 up with a bare legged chick on the pillion.

First thing that comes off all my streetbikes. I don't wear a skirt that can get caught in the chain, nor do I wear lame Tevas, so it's all been good.

Hey stu - close except she was a forerunner of modern dance ....after reading this I think i'll never wear a scarf again and keep the chain guard......

As the New York Times noted in its obituary of the dancer on 15 September 1927, "The automobile was going at full speed when the scarf of strong silk began winding around the wheel and with terrific force dragged Miss Duncan, around whom it was securely wrapped, bodily over the side of the car, precipitating her with violence against the cobblestone street. She was dragged for several yards before the chauffeur halted, attracted by her cries in the street. Medical aid was summoned, but it was stated that she had been strangled and killed instantly."

yeesh......

Mine came off on a ride once, actually only the back screw came out, I heard this crazy grinding noise and I pulled over. The chain had bent/grinded it up pretty good, so I pulled it off and put it on the seat with my storage net.

It is sitting in a bucket in the garage...been there for about a year.
