Well sports fans. looks like there will be a new Bonnie owner very soon. I have been lurking on here for a while learning everything I can about Bonneville's: great information here and really nice folks (much nicer than the BMW R1100S forum).

One thing I would like to ask that I can't find on searches: The shop foreman where I am going to get the Red/Black T100 tells me that he doesn't recommend the airbox eliminators because of the danger of southern thunderstorms soaking the elements and, of course, causing the engine to stop combusting. Has anyone had this happen to them? He says he can modify the airbox to equal what a NARK would do (and from reading this forum I can see that it is probably true) but I would rather the designed piece go in.

It would appear that the common wisdom on this forum is to ride the bike first and then modify it...but I never do that. I modded the heck out of my last 2 bikes before I took delivery - 1998 Ducati 900SS/FE and 2004 BMW R1100S Boxer Cup) and will do the same with the Bonnie. Here is the list that I have compiled from reading the opinions on this forum: please chime in and let me know if something seems really stupid!

1. Thruxton Gel Seat (for the missus)
2. high sissy bar (again for my wife of 32 years)
3. summer screen (I do like wind in my face, but not bugs in my chest)
4. Leatherlyke 18 qt bags (plain, not the concho'ed ones)
5. 19 tooth sprocket
6. Predator Exhaust
7. AI eliminator
8. jets (of course)
9. 35w Motolites (lower fork mounted)
10. center stand.
11. flip up gas cap

Should pull the trigger tomorrow. Time to slow down and enjoy the scenery!

I'll address the airbox question, but also i should say that i think modding it before riding it would be a mistake, at least with some things. Gearing especially....you may LIKE it stock. So i'd say ride it a bit, then mod. You'll never know the difference if you don't.

Now as to the airbox, thats a question i've had for the 2 years i've owned my bike. And from my experience and all i have read here and elsewhere i think a fully modded airbox is close if not as good. If you pull the snorkel, use a very lightly oiled UNI filter and open the bottom of the filter and box to mimmick the top opening and remove the restrictor, at that point it seems to me there should be no more restriction than pod filters. (tho some have said restrictor removal can make things worse, others said the opposite) I have read where people have said it made no or little difference going from a modded box to pods, and i have read where others said it did. But taking everything i have learned and red into consideration i tend to think the difference is small if at all. The advantages to a modded box IMO are worth it unless the difference is huge, and none of the evidence points to that. So i vote for modded box, and thats how i kept mine. Tho the restrictor is still in place due to the speedy having a non removable restrictor.......non removable w/o cutting that is.

Anyways, thats just my opinion, take it for whatever it's worth.

one other thing I'll throw into the mix...the airbox delete or modified box to fit pod filters can be workable in wet conditions by using the waterproof covers for the filters, at , supposedly, no cost to airflow. I have not tried them but the idea seems sound

Thanks for the welcome and for the replys. I decided to let the shop foreman work his magic with the airbox. Should pick her up in a week or so when all the mods come in. Pictures will be forthcoming...

They are halogen lamps that clamp to the lower fork tube. They have a very cool mount that uses the brake caliper bolts, but that only works on a bike with dual disks (like my Boxer Cup R1100S had). I like the lights because they are attractive, light the road well, give a fantastic "train coming" light signature due to the spacing of them, and they warrant the bulbs for as long as you own the lights.
