Greetings,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Just bought my first Triumph (and first motorcycle, for that matter) in March after my return from the sandbox. It's an '07 Blue & White America that I've put Triumph slanted panniers and the short sissy bar on. (Looking over the threads, seems like OC Motorsports can't keep the blue and white ones in stock!)

My inaugural question is regarding TOR pipes. I'm assuming they mean Triumph Off Road pipes. I was considering the long slash cut, because I want to change the sound of the bike to be a bit louder, but not wake the babies on Sunday morning loud.

Is it true that they are marked "Off Road Use Only"? If so, how apparent are the markings? Where I will be commuting daily I will be subject to random and thorough street legal inspections, and I don't want to cause any friction.

If the TORs are marked, any suggestions. Again, not looking for a huge performance boost, just a lil' bit louder.

Thanks all.

JT

they are marked underneath near the ends and can only be read if you lie down beneath the pipe and look up. Even then they are hard to read cos it's etched into the chrome and a lot of the light is reflected back into your eyes. So unless the lurkers feel like getting down and dirty, just be nice and plead ignorance and chances are they'll take your word for it and let you go so they can find the real noisy illegals.

Unfortunately this would have been easier if you had an '06 because they swapped pipes with the speedmaster in '07. So instead of slash cuts the America like yours now has the bullet ends and i'm not sure if this would work. But what some do is remove the baffles. That way you can get louder w/o losing the legal pipes. So maybe someone can chime in and tell you whether you can do that with the bullet ends. That or you can usually find pre-'07 america slash cuts in the classifieds here or at the bonnevilleamerica.com forum cheap. Someone once offered me a pair at something like $100 in brand new condition.

In any case, thats one way to do it w/o losing the legal designation. Plus there are like 4 baffles, and you can remove them one at a time till the volume is right where you want it. Of course if you want a good boost in power the way to go is noise ! Anything quiet enough to keep inspectors happy will likely be much too restrictive to mod the airways, rejet and get a lot of extra ponies. By the way, i saw your bike in the service bay at OCMS sunday, as i was telling your son when he posted about it the other day. Have fun, they're great bikes !

Also, did you have to re-jet the carb with the TORs?

Oops.....sorry. Someone yesterday who lives in san diego bought a blue/white america sunday and posted yesterday. Actually his DAD bought it but he posted. You being in san clemente which is near san diego, i figured you had to be the dad. Didn't notice you said you got it in march till just now. Sorry. Anyways, with Tors you may be able to get away w/o rejetting. But you should anyways because these bikes are tuned lean in stock form. So with tors it will be even more in need of jetting to insure proper mixture. You don't have to, but the benefits are worth it, and jetting is simple really. You'll get more power, it'll run better, and too lean is not good for an engine and in the worse case can cause damage. I'd put 125 mains, one shim on the needles, and turn the pilot screws out to about 3 and 1/2 turns. That should put you in the ballpark. The only hassle with jetting is the cramped quarters getting the screws out. But spend a couple hours in the garage when you're bored and just do it. It's well worth it. But also consider whether you want more power than that will get you. Because if in a few months you decide you want more and decide to open up the airway with a less restrictive filer, snorkel removal, etc, then you'll have to re-jet again. So if you think you may want to do that eventually, i would do it now. If the power is all you care for as is, then i'd just install the jets i recommended once you have the tors on and be done with it. But remember that just removing the snorkel and adding a UNI filter or a K&N will take all of 1 minute and allow you to jet even higher for probably another 2 HP or thereabouts. And 3 HP on a 54 HP bike is a very noticeable advantage.

wow, glad I live on the east coast :???:

I have TORs on my bike, and I can't see them being an issue with any noise regulations. don't get me wrong - they sound great...and I love 'em. they really 'bark' when you twist the wrist, 'specially in 5th gear :-D

I have an '06 America and I put the TOR's on last year - they sound great and definitly increased the power. My Dealer also rejetted the carbs but I don't know what he used. The pipes give a nice rumble but don't sound too loud to be illegal. I give them a "thumbs up"! As someone on this site said last year when I was considering the pipes, they said it sounded like a motorcycle now instead of a sewing machine. Was that you Dazco?

Maybe, can't recall tho. But pretty much everyone has said that at least once. They were using that term when i first reg'd here. Mine sure changed with the thunderbike tubes. I even wrapped the baffles further up just to quiet them down and i still set off car alarms all the time.

Yea, it's not just the left coast thing thing. It's cause I want to use this bike to commute to work (MCAS Camp Pendleton) and the base here is a stickler for legality.

Fun-spoilers.

I've also noticed the sewing machine thing...
