After a short ride on my Bonnie (20 miles?), my rear disk is scorching hot. Obviously the pads are sticking but why? It's been that way since I bought the bike used.

I've had pads stick on a car before and it was the piston in the caliper that was frozen up.

probably the original brake fluid. It can corrode, and you're *supposed* to flush it out and replace it every so often. Your pistons probably have corroded in the rear caliper.

The rear brakes work fine but aren't releasing fully.

If you're still in the waranty, I'd take it in to the dealer.

Did you refrain from using your rear brake during the entire ride? If you are using it at all, you can expect it will get very hot.

If the brake pads are worn down the pistons can become canted if they protrude too far out. This prevents them from fully retracting.

Changing the brake pads can fix this.

However as was mentioned, if the brake fluid is dirty you should go ahead and replace it (simple job).

I'm sorry, but I cant go along with this dirty brake fluid theory. The bike is only 2 years old for heavens sake. :???:

Make sure you're not riding the rear brake...I had to lower the pedal on mine to clear my big feet

Mine's the same way. It's a 2005 bike that I bought brand new in Feb. The rear brake works fine, but it gets very hot. I took it to the dealer, and they told me it was fine. I was, and continue to be, skeptical; but I've put almost 2,000 miles on the bike since I got it and the pads look almost brand-new, so I figure that (a) it's not affecting my braking; and (b) it's not affecting the longevity of the pads; so (c) I'm not worrying about it right now. At some point I'll take a more serious look at it; but I think the rear brake gets poor air circulation, and obviously all brakes generate a lot of heat in use, so I'm not worrying about it.
