Having read various bits of advice here about running at higher RPM's, I decided to pay attention. What a difference! This 790 motor really likes to spin, as Sweat and others keep telling us. Now I'm running it up to 65-70 mph before shifting to 5th, so instead of lugging it, I'm just hitting the power band. This makes for much better performance all around.
I had been considering a bigger front sprocket, but I see now that more teeth is not the way to go for me. I'm very happy with the stock ratios now that I'm not so hung up about higher revs. I guess those engineers did know a thing or two.

They don't like being ridden like a Harley now do they?
No, dog, they don't! Ride it like a Harley and you'll be lugging it. I don't like to wind it up on the highway, but sometimes on the twisties, I'll let it find a nice place around 6500 rpm. It gives me more engine braking (which I have to keep reminding myself is mostly rear braking) and once my ears get used to the higher revs, it's fun.

I've done interstate runs on my Stella, and hence was totally used to running an engine at 6,000 rpms or more for an hour straight - to me, the Bonnie seems crazy-relaxed at 75 mph in fifth! I don't think of myself as a hard rider; but I'm used to keeping an engine wound up (the only way to get power out of a tiny 2-stroke single), so I find myself shifting pretty late on the Bonnie. She's real happy at high rpms! Occasionally I like to feel that sensation of shifting into third at 60 on a hard accel! But I've only actually done that a few times, as I imagine it's really NOT good for my safety, at least.
I can't imagine owning a bike that didn't want to rev. I've never ridden a Harley, but I'd think it would drive me nuts.

'They don't like being ridden like a Harley now do they? '
True, but I doubt they would like being ridden like a fireblade either
Midrange is where these motors are happiest. My bonnie pulls like a train between 3000 - 5500 rpm! Kind of a sweet spot.
It is great to have a bike that doesnt need to be constantly revved to get motoring, especially with the mods ive made.

after breakin, I ran my bonnie up to rev limit in second getting on the turnpike, about 65 or so. runs real good in all 5 gears. My old 74 alfa spider gets an Italian Tune Up quite often too, makes it run better after what used to be called " blowin the cobs out".

How about 18T and 6000rpm?
Now that's fast and furious!

Never having ridden a Harley, I never got into the habit of shifting at low RPMs. I just shift when it's needed. Subjective? You bet!

The rev limiter is there to tell us old, forgetful men (sorry women--I'm not including you on purpose) to shift to another gear. I had my rev limiter increased so my memory would have longer to kick in, but sometimes the rev limiter still has to jog my memory cells. :-D Those Norman Hyde Togas sound really good at 8100 rpm. :-D :-D Now, what was I talkin about--oh, yeah, shifting...well some of us even get in the groove of shifting to where we hate to stop and think ol' Bonnie should have a 6th gear. :-D
My Tiger has a 6th gear and I loose count long before I get to 6th--have to look at the tach to tell if I am through shifting or not. Sure can't use seat o' the pants feel on that 1050 triple. :-D I rolled the throttle to pass a car thinking I was in 6th when I was actually in 5th--sure glad the seat is shaped to hold my butt on the bike. :-D

I sometimes think a few people have bought the bonnie for the wrong reasons.
