Has anyone here ever heard a quick, high-pitched squealing/scraping sound coming from the gearbox upon taking off in first? It has only happened a few times (like 5 or 6) since I've owned my bike. When I downshift into first, or take off from first, I get this squealing scraping sound —not grinding. Feels like slipping accompanied with this very "high" sound. Like metal whizzing and scraping. It doesn't last long and goes right into gear without any problem. Then it doesn't happen for like a month. I have already checked the clutch and replaced the springs with heavier ones. It never makes the sound for a mechanic (surprise surprise). I thought perhaps I wasn't putting it into gear enough and that was why it was doing it when I started off in first gear, but when it happened today, I was downshifting and I certainly put it into first. Anyone experiece this before? Any helpful suggestions are much appreciated.

It sounds like the clutch squeal I used to get with my TRX850. Yamaha drilled extra holes in the clutch basket to allow more oil flow, which helped quite a bit, but was only completely cured when I started using Motul 5100 semi synth. Motorex was another one recommended, but I stuck with what worked.
Cheers

ya know, the problem started after my second oil change—done by a different mechanic. I wonder if it's the MOBIL 1?

if regular car type mobil 1 was used, its a possibility.
the mobil 1 t synthetic is specced for triumph, and wont hurt anything

hi, my thruxton does the same, only ever setting off though, never on the down shift, scared the **** out of me the first time, but here`s the thing, it will only ever do it at one particular junction which is slightly up hill and then not every time. (2 or 3 times this year and i ride regularly) i`ve tried to get it to make that noise for someone else to hear but no can do, even head down, throttle on the stops, full on hooligan mode, still no noise.
i have started giving the throttle a blip just as i set off from that junction and touch wood, its been a month or so since i last heard any noises.
my triumph dealers did the last service so i`m presuming they used the right oil but i will mention it to them at the next service.

My Scrambler does the squeal at almost the very same time and place when it does do it... Weird. We need a "car talk" for motorcycles.

I've put 4,000 miles on each of my bikes ove the past 8 months, a T100 and a Scrambler, and neither bike has made such a sound.

Hi Guys
This sounds exactly like the problem on my T100. Have any of you experienced a loss drive when this occurs?
I have only had it twice in 5,000 plus miles, the last time I was in a slow right hand turn and the bike dropped because it lost drive and I was just getting a screeching noise that changed intensity as I revved.
I have posted an entry about this so would love to hear from you guys.
Best regards. :hammer:

Yeah, my T-100 does it. But only when the engine is cold....so it's usually during the cooler months when I am on my way to work.

its hard to say if there is a loss of drive because my bike has only done it a few times on set off and then you instinctively back off the throttle anyway.
its hard describing noises but the squeal isn`t a high pitched squeal it has a deeper tone to it if you know what i mean.
now i think about it, it has only happened when its cold and maybe a mile after start up but only ever at that one junction, never anywhere else.
i will have to come home from work a different way.
