I've had my Scrambler a month now, put on about 1350 miles.

Every tank of gas has resulted in fewer miles than the last. I had assumed that it was a result of me getting more confident on the bike, and getting past the "break in period", and thus riding it a little harder.

My first tank gave me 51mpg, second 47, so on until this last fill up, 33mpg.

Does this seem normal (assuming I've been pushing it a little :-D ), or is it so low that I should be looking for motor issues? Or maybe I just need to lay off the throttle a bit? :???:

Opinions please...

I've never had fuel consumption so low since the about 1000mls. Should get around 120mls before hitting reserve with normal riding. Even a good thrashing should return 110mls on a tank.

might need its first oilchange; they should get more frugal as they run in. 48 ish mpg is more normal. I've had 283 km out of a tank. incl. reserve

I think something is wrong or leaking, I get well over 50MPG and higher at times, I average a fair spped as well, its lowest milage seems to be drowning down the FWY.

It all depends on type of riding, I think. I get 140 miles to reserve when I'm on country highways, but in central Minneapolis (where I live and work) I only get about 90-95 miles to reserve. If you take a lot of shorter trips, sit in traffic, need to let her warm up much, etc., you'll see much worse gas mileage than if you're letting her purr at 70 in 5th all day long.

Think about external factors that might be contributing - you already said that you've been pushing her harder, which will contribute. What about riding patterns, conditions, situations, etc.?

Finally, how are you calculating your gas mileage? Remember that there really isn't a good way to accurately measure gas mileage on a single tank - too many variables, not enough miles. I keep a log book of everything that happens to the bike, and often individual tanks of gas will seem much more different than they really are, due to things like how full I filled the tank at the last fill-up - "full" can be really different from fill-up to fill-up. Be careful to make sure you're using a sane method of calculating it, and that you don't jump to conclusions based on too little data - a single tank of gas that seems to yield really bad gas mileage, for example.

Got the oil change etc, at 540 miles.

I switched brands of gas, to eliminate that as a concern.

I have calculated the mileage of every tank so far, the ones before this 33mpg tank were 36 and 37mpg. I make sure that each fillup brings the level to about the same place, to get it as accurate as possible.

I filled up last night, and I'm going easy on the throttle (didn't go above 75mph on the freeway, easy acceleration on the streets) for this tank to see what happens. My commute is about 50 miles roundtrip, of which about 40 is freeway and 10 streets.

Hmmm, 40 freeway / 10 streets with the freeway around 75 should def. make for better mileage than 33 mpg. Good luck!

I have never gotten better than 37/38 MPG on my Scrambler and in the winter it is in the low 30s. I probably ride it pretty hard but it is a motorcycle and supposed to be ridden hard.

By the way those numbers are in US gallons.
