The other day I rode for about an hour, stopped for twenty minutes to warm up, and headed out again. In a few minutes the engine began to die, as if I needed to switch to reserve. A look at the trip meter showed only 71 miles since last fill up, but I switched anyway. The engine relit. I went to the nearest gas station and filled up; it took only 1.8 gallons. Any one ever have this occurance? Could it have been a bit of debris in the system?

Hmmm, never had that. I did have times when I used up way more gas than normal.

Are you sure you filled it up completly? Sometimes, with the bike on the stand/angle it might seem full and isn't.

Also, maybe a little water/condensation in the gas?

Yeah, it was filled to just below the neck of the tank as suggested in the manual.

If you didn't ride it much this winter, and if you didn't stabilize the gas the chances are you have some crud (technical term) in the system, either at the filter at the bottom of the tank or in the carbs. Before you go tearing anything apart, go to an auto store and pick up some MMO, Marvel Mystery Oil, and run two or three tanks of gas with that mixed in. It is a solvent and should desolve the crud without having to tear into the system. And next year be sure to put Stabil in the gas before you put it away for long periods (over three weeks) of not riding.

Even though your bike is new, the same thing applies. If a bike sits around at a dealer with old gas in it for a while, buildup is also possible.

Another thing to check is the gas cap vent if the MMO doesn't take care of all the symptoms.

+1 on the vent cap. Seems to be a common problem.

davidc,

How many miles do you have on your bike? I have an 07 and after about 200 miles my bike started hesitating and became hard to start. It would run fine and all of sudden while cruising down the freeway would just die...like it was running out of gas.

Ended up having the shop pick it and look it over good....turns out metal shavings in the carburator. Never did find out where they came from..but I had only run a couple of tanks through the bike..so I'm assuming it was in the gas system when I bought the bike.

Tom.

Like GreyGost said, "+1 on the vent cap. Seems to be a common problem". My 06 has the same symptoms. Early on I discovered when I managed to get the gas cap off, (there was a lot of suction) air rushed into the tank and all returned to normal. The dealer said it was due to a crimped vent hose on the bottom right side of the tank. When it happens and I just give a slight twist to loosen the cap and fuel flow resumes. I'll get back to the dealer when time allows. Your complaint has been mentioned many times in this forum.

What a PITA this must be!!!

I knew guys were having a hard time getting the cap off to fill but didn't know the cap was causing enough suction to stop fuel flow.

... counting my blessings.
