Ok, I know it's cold but last year Bonnie didn't phart when starting up....now she does. It takes about 10 miles to warm up...then I can turn the idle back down....Is she lean or getting too much air or what?....I turned the pilot screws out 3 turns... :???:

Hey, J: nice to know that the snow is gone enough to ride, at least a little!!

Couple of things. Did you stabilize the gas over the winter? And did you ride it long enough after you put the Stabil in it to get it down into the carbs? If not, it sounds like some deposits have built up in the carbs. If you didn't mess with the carbs over the winter and nothing else has changed that is the likely culprit. After all, it was good before it sat a long time, so there aren't many other things that would cause the coughing back you are describing. Get some MMO -Marvel Mystery Oil - at the local auto mart and it should clear it up. Usually takes two of three tanks with MMO mixed in to get her running completely smoothly again.

Second, if you are literally "turning the idle" up and down, meaning turning the round idle screw, that is the wrong way to adjust for cool morning startups. Adjust the idle by the use of the "fast idle slide", read "choke." Pull the choke out all the way to get it started, and push it in after a minute or so - just far enough so that it will both idle and not stall when you give it gas. Ride it for a few miles like that on partial choke until it is warm enough to run without the choke, without stuttering. These Bonnies are cold blooded.

Looking forward to riding with you this season. Seems like forever since the last Packless Rats ride. Bob is right now working on a route for a ride in early June. I still don't know if I can make the little jaunt that Dave is trying to set up in May, but I know you can't make that one and Sue will be out in St. Louis with her mom and sibs that weekend.

One way or the other we'll get together.

In any case, try the MMO before you make it more complicated than it might be. Its a whole lot easier to pour in a little solvent to loosen the crud than to take the carbs off.

Thanks Monte...Great advice

Yes, I Stabilized and ran thru carbs....Yep, I use the choke and it helps alot. Usually up the round knob at the first stop sign for 10-15 miles then she is idleing well enough to back down a 1/2 turn to a reasonable 1,000 on the tach...
