I've got like a gazillion tools and every one I get I find I 'need' another. So, like where to start? Get them as you need them, unless your rich.
Socket set, open wrenches, hex set,
Click type torque wrench is like, irreplaceable.
Triumnph manual is good, Haynes manual is better (my opinion)
Get none, ride the bike, enjoy.
Be warned though, If you buy the wrenches you'll be addicted. Then you've got a second hobby for the price of the first - good deal.
Number one tool - air pressure gauge.

I am with Merlin, get a touque wrench!
Also the bike lift, about $60 from several sources is awesome. Other than this just score what you need as needs arise. Kinda like making payments.
Rig up a carb synch set up, thats cool to have as well.
Other than the special deals, just a good set of combo wrenches allen wrenches and sockets will get you a long way.
I have the Haynes, tells me everything I need for half the coin of the Triumph manual.

The best "tool" I bought was a $ 50 electric tire inflator from Sears. I'm much more on top of my tire pressures than if I had to stop at a gas station. Two minutes and my tires are perfect.

I love my Craftsman Gear Wrenches. I stashed my old combination wrenches.

HI
The best general purpose tool I have for my bike "Vice Grips"
the guys on here told me about them.
They were a bit hard to find in the UK, but you can't get into the original carbs or any soft bolts without them.
Once your in you can replace all the soft cross head screws with Jenks stainless hex bolts and save yourself a whole lot of work.
There also very good for getting a grip on anything difficult to access.

bricktop,
If your socket set doesn't have one, get yourself a 36mm socket, for the nut on your gearbox sprocket.
