Guy behind the parts counter at the nearby japanese motorcycle delaer recommended brake and clutch cleaner. I know a lot of folks use kerosene. Is brake and clutch cleaner too harsh? Will it damage the o-rings in the chain?
BTW, Triumph dealer is WAY on the other side of town - that's why i by stuff like this at the Honda place.

WD 40 to clean...rub down with an old rag, then PJ1 Blue chain lube....Do all while warm and wipe excess to avoid splatter every 500 miles...P.S. I'd rather be riding than cleaning a freakin' chain...Oh Well!!

Ditto. Gentle wire brush if there's any rust.

So what about using the chain lube itself to clean the chain? Repsol is very thin, and in combination with a rag and grunge brush, it seems to do a good job as a cleaner, as well as the lube. Spray, scrub and wipe, then spray again, voila! Is there a reason not to do this?

KEROSENE! It's CHEAP! won't damage the o-rings. WD-40 has been accused of causing rubber to deteriorate. I personally don't know if that's true or not, but Kerosene is cheaper and works very well!

Kerosene.......
I plan on using WD-40 to keep my chain clean & shiny after I clean it real well with Kerosene. Then I'll throw the Grunge Brush away as it advised against by those 'in-the-know' NOT to use a steel brush on our chain.
I LOVE the appearance of a pretty (clean & shiny) chain, thus the WD-40 approach. However I'll still spray Bel Ray Clean Chain "Wax" down the middle of my links while they're hot, letting it sit overnight. But unlike my practice of past, I'll follow through with the WD-40 & rag swipe on the sides of my chain.
Someday, I'm gonna git me one dem pertty Gold chains for my bike....! Keeping it clean and blingy with WD-40.

Kerosene. WD40 would probably work because it's so similar to kerosene. BRAKE AND CLUTCH CLEANER?? You gotta be kidding. Ignore anything else this guy told you. B&C cleaner is strong stuff, likely to remove or damage paint anywhere it's oversprayed, and you won't find it close to the o-rings on my chain. If I use it, I spray it on a rag (away from the bike), and then carefully wipe down the brake rotor with the rag, keeping the rag away from anything but the rotor. Using B&C cleaner on your chain is kinda like washing your face with a Brillo pad--it'll work, but . . . I think shops use B&C to clean oil off engines when they're working on bikes. I once saw them spray a bunch of it around my T100 engine then blast it with compressed air. It cleaned it alright, but I told them never to do that again to my bike.
