I'm running a 790 with TOR's and a rejet. Would I be OK to remove the snorkle from the airbox without having to rejet again? Would I gain any power this way? How can I tell if is running too lean?

Any advice really appreciated!

With the stock air filter ,and removing the snorkel I did not notice any
Performance gains. And I did not have to re-jet.
The most accurate way to check your air/fuel mix is through the exhaust
With some special test equipment, I’m not sure what it’s called.
All I do is look at the spark plugs. There are a lot of charts out there
That will tell you what they should look like. If they are on the white
Side your to lean, if there on the black side your to rich. They should
Be brownish/grayish.
Now if you change the stock air filter to a free flow filter ,and open up the
Air box with one of the kits or remove the restrictor plate from inside
The air box. Then you will have to re-jet , and you will defiantly
Notice a performance difference.

Removing the snorkle may allow you to get a bit more air into the filter, but I don't think you are going to get anymore of that air from the filter to the engine if you are still using the stock filters. If the engine does not get anymore air, you are not going to see any performance gains. If you're looking at getting more performance, you should definitely chop the airbox up. I gained 4-5hp when I got rid of mine for K&N's. Use the Jenks chart for jet and needle configurations, it is pretty dead on accurate.

Thanks very much for the advice guys. What I hear you both saying is you have to go to K&N's and rejet in order to feel a difference.

I'll hold off until I'm ready to do it properly. Sounds like a worthwhile mod if you can gain 4-5 ponies.
