Hello one and all. I am a proud new owner of 06 speedmaster, just got it Thursday. I can't get the forks locked. I put the key in. Turn it counterclockwise the lock does go in but the key only turns a 1/4 turn and stops and I can not remove the key at that time. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance for any advise. :???:

Welcome, and good luck with the new Speedmaster. You'll have lots of fun on it.

The fork lock can be quite a wrestling match. Unless you absolutely need it for security, fageddaboudit, or get a chain or disc lock.

Enjoy & ride safe!

You're experiencing a very common problem that for whatever reason a lot of people here have had. It WILL break in, and very quickly. But the first few times are tough ! I had the same problem, but after maybe 4-5 times of using it the problem completely disappeared. I suspect it may be the cosmoline or whatever that stuff is called that they coat the bikes in for shipment to preserve them.

Just keep trying and it will quickly work itself out. Just remember to move the bars back and fourth as you are trying to turn the key. But don't think anything is wrong because this is normal when new.

Silverado57 is right, I have the '06 America and it is equally challenging. However, the few times I have used it, you need to push it in and then turn it - you may need to take a little pressure off the lock mechanism by turning the steering column a little until the lock finds the opening.

Thank you for your input. I will keep trying. I have been doing what you have suggested and not been able to lock it once. when I do get it to lock, how far will the key turn- 1/4 1/2 and then come out ? By the way I could not be happier and can't remember smiling this much in a long long time.

It only turns a tiny bit. Maybe like 12 noon to 1 or 2 o'clock. But mine was just as hard. At first i couldn't even do it at all, but i kept at it till it did. Keep the bars in the full left position and wiggle them as you're pushing the key in while trying to turn it clockwise.

When I bought my 06 last year, the guy who checked me out before I took it recommended that I not ever use the fork lock. His reasoning was if some knucklehead knocks your bike over there is a very high chance that the pin in the lock will shear off and gets jammed in the column, making it Immpossible to stear for the ride back to the shop. I never even put the key on my key ring.

Those locks do not turn easily. What I have to do to lock and unlock is to jimmy the handlebars back and forth a little bit until the key turns. So far so good with the lock once I had learned that trick.
