Hi I run a 2003 speedmaster and was wondering whether the later model with slightly larger engine is significantly better. Has anybody who has updated any comment?

It's simply got different cams that were designed to deliver more low end torque at the cost of top end HP. The extra CC's matter little if any i'm sure. Is it better? Depends on what you like. I haven't ridden both, but given the choice I'd opt for the low end torque, so i'm glad to own the 865. It's especially important if you want to gear up which many including myself have done. I geared up 2 teeth on the front and one on the rear for a considerably benefit in RPM/MPH. I can now cruise at speed much more relaxed. And the bike still pulls hard at the top and so i don't feel i lost anything over the stock gearing or the 790 engine. That said, the difference is probably not worth worrying about if you had your eye on a bike with one engine or the other.

But i'll take every little bit i can get because torque is king for me. Unless you are always winding her out thru the gears, torque is much more usefull since you use it every time you let go of the clutch on the street. So i'm glad to have the newer engine even if the difference is minimal.

Just do what I did and put in the 904 Big Bore. Problem/discussion solved!

This doesn't directly answer your question but is still relevant to the discussion...in my back to back comparison of a 790 Bonnie (jetted & piped) & stock 865 Thruxton I couldn't detect any seat of the pants difference in power between those two. If anything, the Bonnie was subjectively stronger. What Dazco said above is the bottom line.
