Before my question, let me put a disclaimer in. Most of the bikes I've had in the past had fuel injection and shaft drive. Ok. That said, my '06 Speedmaster has what I can only describe as a lag and a surge. It's had this from day one. I notice this mostly in the lower gears. It's quite annoying. I recently changed my pipes an re-jetted the carbs, but no change. I adjusted the chain - still no change. Is this a normal by-product of carburation versus fuel injection or is something else going on? This happens when I roll off the throttle and roll it back on. Any suggestions?

I now think it may be drive train play. Maybe I am just not used to the chain and the trans?? Either way I don't like it

No. It's not. I don't think it's running lean but better be safe than sorry. I will have to pull a plug and see.

open up the vacuum ports in the slides to 3mm, that will change your throttle response. You might also try a different needle or try shimming your needles.

Also you may wanna check your airbox drain tubes. One backfire and the caps can pop off. I found both mine gone a while back. That can cause more intake not to mention unfiltered. Not sure if it could cause enough extra airflow to cause a lean condition, unless maybe it was on the edge already.
