I am just about ready to replace my stock rear Metzeler 130/80 tire. I really liked this tire but I am thinking about going to the same tire exept a 150 for a little more width. Mostly just for looks but I was just wondering if I might get a little more life out of the tire since the load will be spread over a wider area ?

Thanks Rick....................

Tire life will be affected more by air pressure than width.

The wider tyre debate provokes considerable emotion and a wide range of opinions. IMHO stick with the OEM tyre unless you really understand what you're doing and are looking for a particular change in performance characteristics - even if performance to you means looks. You will also need to know that the particular tyre you select will provide the characteristics you require with your current set up. Frankly, it's quite a big ask. The short answer is that a 150 of similar compound to your OEM tyre will give you LESS mileage and WORSE performance (if performance means riding performance) as it's simply not designed for your rim size. Simple. But many seem to consider looks above riding performance and if that floats your boat, so be it. There will be many more diverse opinions....

I just put a 150 Kenda (bias ply) Tire on the rear of my bonnie. I bought it because it was cheap (65.00) and I'm not sure if I'll want to keep it on, consider it an experiment. I took my first ride on it today and it is pretty stiff and the bike doesn't seem to handle as well, but I'm not an aggressive rider at all, so it suits me fine. Very stable while riding straight. I still have the same stock Metz on the front. Also, it's still a little cool here. Anyway, it sure looks great.

When it's time, I'll go to a 140 or 150. I'm not an aggressive rider, and to be honest...a 150 on the back is really not "that" wide.

The 140 is the go it is actually the proper size for the rim the 130 sits flatter looking from the back the 140 is rounder and acts as a better hinge.
Tyre life is more dependant on the way the tyre is treated ie pressure, corner speed/braking accelleration etc and rtoad surface.

A wider tyre will slow your turn in. Most wear takes place down the centre - there are more straights than corners.
