I removed my stock air box assembly last night, (in preparation for my ARK thats on the way  ) & the stock air filter was noticeably dirty (or much darker) in the "bottom" end, or far right closed end if you will. It basically looks perfectly divided at the mid-section of the air box. Right side dirty, or darkened, left side perfectly clean. My bike has 6,400 miles on it & otherwise stock. The pipes have blued evenly & as far as I know run evenly on each cylinder. Does this mean anything? Or is there something about the stock filter/box I don't understand?

i believe if you mix the shredded filter medium, with the entrails of a dead chicken(they dont lend out their entrails while alive) and do this at midnite, under a full moon, the answer will be clear.
ah, pardon, what was the question?
ah, yes, the answer is forthcoming...
dont sweat it

The stock airbox assembly is a piece of ****e.

They go ahead and put in a huge filter, which should make for good flow, and then subdivide the airbox interior with baffles and end up masking and blocking that same flow except for a very small area that you found to be dirty. The remainder of your filter is clean because it's relatively difficult for any significant amount of air to flow in that region of the filter or airbox.

Even removing the internal baffle leaves most of the filter masked. You have two choices to get real flow: remove the airbox and use one of the twin pod filter systems, or remove the internal baffle AND the cast in slots that hold the baffle in place along with all of the baffles that surround the bottom half of the filter.

As far as your filter is concerned, you could probably spin it 180 degrees and get another 10,000 miles out of it.

Did you have the snorkel in? If you did, it could indicate the only portion of that filter that was actually passing air.

After reading Brian's post, and re-reading yours, I think Brian's hit on the problem.

That snorkel internal extension into the filter is another tight spot that obstructs flow into the front half of the filter. The flow into the airbox has to make a 180 degree turn to reach the front half of the filter, and even after it's made the turn there's very little room between the extension and the filter for that flow to go.

It's easy enough to cut the extension off, and I can't but believe that it will improve flow quite a bit, but there's much more that can be done with both the stock and after market airboxes.
