I'm about to install an auxilliary power socket on my '06 T-100. To do this, I have to remove the gas tank. The instructions say 1) turn off fuel tap and disconnect hose from tap, 2) remove fuel tank mounting bolts, 3) disconnect breather hose, 4) remove tank.

My tank is full now. Wouldn't disconnecting the hose from the tap end up spilling the gas from the tank? Is it really as simple as the instructions make it sound? Can someone post a detailed step-by-step?

thanks,
Michael

I would add to the instruction's to first fire the bike up and let it run a bit with the petcock turned off so as to run most of the fuel out of the fuel line before disconnecting the line from the tap.

or you can close the fuel tap and drain the float bowls from each carb using the drain screw located just above each float bowl, it's a small allen screw.

Or just let a little spill out. Its not much.

Be sure and set up a place to hold the tank so you can set it straight down. Kicking some boards around to lean the petcock off the ground is hard when your hands are full of tank.

I love it, I think we all end up removing the tank when its full.

Michael, After me...

Before you start, figure out where you're going to put the tank once you get it off the bike. Remember that the petcock sticks down about an inch below the tank, and it's not a good idea to rest a full tank of gas on the petcock. I usually put a towel on my workbench, then put the tank on it so the petcock hangs over the edge.

If you've never had the tank off, before you begin you'll need to buy/find a small hose clamp to replace the stock clamp - you'll have to cut it off.

Take your time, make sure every move is deliberate, and you won't scratch the tank.

Ok, here we go..

1 - make sure the petcock is turned to the OFF position
2 - take the seat off
3 - remove the two bolts that secure the tank to the frame.
4 - gently pry the rear portion of the tank up and put something between it and the frame (I use a piece of s-c-r-a-p (editors don't like this word?) 2x4
5 - if you've never removed the fuel line where it connects to the petcock, gently cut the factory clamp off the fuel line, then reach in under the tank and pull the fuel line toward the right side of the bike until it come free from the petcock
6 - reach under the right side of the tank and remove the breather tube - a gentle, steady pull is all you need.

Now you're ready to remove the tank. Grabbing it with both hands, lift up and to the rear, clearing the recesses in the tank from the rubber bumpers on the frame.

It's that simple. Reinstalling it is a simple reverse of the procedures above.

Good luck!

Take it down to 1/4 tank - then do it. It can leak oughta the vent tube when full! Pretty easy t odo. Wire tie all those loose wires up to the frame while your at it- a cleaner look?

I had over a half tank of gas when I took my tank off to remove the AI last weekend. We're only talking about a teaspoon of gas coming out of the line once you disconnect from the petcock. Not enough to worry about. Once you see how easy it is to get the tank off, you will marvel at the simplicity of the engineering. A well designed bike.

When I first got my bike two years ago....I was sweating bullets the first time I took off my tank....I had never done anything like that before...now...I'll take something off and screw it up in a heartbeat!

I know how you feel Mike...

It's all good...this is the best site in the world...
