Hey Everyone...Just got a brand new 07 scrambler tonight....I'll post up pics and do a nice formal intro asap but right now I've got problems.

I've read the threads here for a while, lurking till I got my bike and now I have it...have put 2 miles on it and now the gas is jammed. The stock cap was jammed and I got that off finally and replaced it with a locking cap. But in my excitement I forgot to take the threads down a hair or add a dab of grease and now this cap is jammed. I can get it to turn but it makes the ratchet sound in both directions. I can turn it with my hand (tough but can) but like I said it rachets in both directions. Any thoughts?

I'm going to grab some channel locks tommorrow and a rubber ratchet thing that people have suggested here, as well as call the dealer and see if they have a magic solution...but am I f'ed? Ideas?

Thanks in advance...and I'm excited to be a part of this place!

Most of us here have gone through the same problem. I would go back to the dealer as long as it is a new bike. You can solve this problem in the future with a Monza Fuel cap from Sel-Motion, just push the button and it flips open, problem solved :-D Oh by the way welcome to the forum :-D

DO NOT USE CHANNEL LOCKS!

get a rubber wrench thing for oil filters, or something else that won't scratch the tank!

I'm sort-of a newbie myself. I got my '06 bonnie last March. This is my first street bike. I had the same problem the first couple of times I filled her up. Fortunately, I was able to get the cap off.

I figured out that I was just twisting the cap too tight. The only explanation I can think of is the plastic threads of the cap are flexed and bound up into metal threads of the tank. tis only a guess.

Now I just turn the cap until it stops and no more. It seems that the stock cap has a slip mechanism that allows the top of the cap to turn about one and one-half to two turns after the cap is properly seated. If you try to turn the cap any further it binds up the threads. I think its odd to construct it this way rather than a ratchet system that prevents overtightening, but that is the way it seems to have been made.

I would like to retract the statement about the threads.

It might be a rubber seal inside the cap. After i made that post, I realized that sounded a little far-out. Maybe there is a gasket under the cap; I can't remember. I'm going to check it when I get home.

But still, I have had no problems since I stopped turning the cap beyond the the stop point.

yeah, look, this petrol cap thing is a bastard initially, I had an early moment of panic some distance from home on reserve... The problem seems to be that rather large square section rubber sealing ring - replace it with a proper 'O' ring (round section) - doesn't tighten up quite so much and put pressure back on the tap. Some lubricant (of course..) helps a bit - vaseline or someting. The problem goes away with use, and usually a worn section in tyour gloves at the heel of your hand will provide enough leverage to crack it. Multigrips with a piece of rag always work as a last resort - cheers and congrats on a great bike - is it green/silver? cheers Pat
