Just kidding on the title. I am wondering if anyone has seen this before. Im sure someone has. I try to search this site before posting anyhting, but either I am an idiot or the search function is horrible on this forum. I can never find anyhting with it.

Anyway...

I am trying to figure out if this is normal operation or possibly a bad fit on my bike. Where the header pipes connect to my TOR's, I get quite a bit of black residue. It look slike it is blowing back out of the joint, but in a forward direction. I have even noticed black soot on the garage floor. Looks to be when I start her up in the mornings. Is this normal? or do I need to reseat the TOR's? I will try to post a pic of it tonight when I get home.

It is probably normal. I found out the first time I took my exhaust apart that my stock mufflers came installed new with a bit of silicone sealant in the clamp area. You could try that, and make sure the clamp is tight enough.

Soccermasta,

I have a 2005 Bonnie with TORs also, the instructions recommend using high temp silicone sealer for the junction where the header and muffler meet, I did this and have no residue appearing at all...

Thanks for the info guys. I will definately give the sealer a try. Any brand suggestions? I am assuming this can be had at a local parts shop? Autozone maybe?

Any brand should do. The high temp silicone is usually red, and can go to 600 °F. I have seen it at WalMart for around 5 bucks. Auto places would also have it.

I've also used the regular "clear" silicone and it also works great. Just glob it on the header pipe, install the muffler, and wipe off the excess.

Any old silicone (pure silicone) will do--it will withstand way more temp than your header/silencer junction sees. I used GE silicone on my old BSA at the header/head junction and it lasted for years when the headers would get cherry red for 6-8 inches.

I don't recommend over-tightening the clamp on the silencer...you can create a problem whenever you need to remove and reinstall the silencers. I do recommend removing the silencers only when you have to remove them as in replace them. For other type maintenance, I try to leave them alone. Remember, you can lower the rear wheel easily by taking the shocks loose at the top and removing them from the mount (you need a center stand or bike jack for this).
