I'm thinking of taking a trip to the grand canyon some time this year and I'm wondering what would be the best time of the year. Any travelers here have any recommendations. The trip will start from the San Francisco bay area.

Thanks

We were there the 3rd week of september last year. No crowds and not hot! It did rain like mad for one day. The no crowd thing was the best. More Europeans than Americans. Plenty of room at the campgrounds. We were staying on the south rim.

I rode to the Grand Canyon last October. It rained from Flagstaff to the Canyon and was cold and wet as hell. Sucked, but that was the only day of bad weather we had in 9 days.

We were there in late July of 2000 and the weather was great. I understand the road to the North Rim is closed for several months in late winter/early spring due to heavy snowfall. I believe the North Rim is lots less touristy than the South Rim, because the lodge at the end of the road is truly the end of the road! No thru traffic. We rode our rental Harleys around most of the roads close to the lodge and did not feel at all crowded.

Also, with all those Beemers, you probably know bunches of guys from the local BMW shops and clubs that could provide lots of info for you.

I lived and worked at the south rim for about 2.5 years back in the day. I have to vote for September/October as the best months of the year to see the canyon. The air is crisp and the crowds are thinner.

IMHO, the real trick is how you see the canyon for the first time. If you take the main road from the park entrance you will catch glimpses of the canyon which I think ruins the experience. The best way to see it for the first time, IMHO, is after entering the park take the service road to the front of the Bright Angel Lodge. Walk through the lobby and gaze upon it.

The north rim is of course super too, but the view from the south is better, once again IMHO.

Hope you have the best trip.
