No, I'm not trying to win the prize for the 1,000,000th question on jetting. And I'm sorry if this was discussed before, but I couldn't find it by sorting. I am getting ready to tear into the carb jets after getting some like-new, used Staintunes from another RAT.net member. I was all prepared to take off fender, and airbox, etc. and remove carbs from bike. Then I had a conversation with another owner who said to just drop the bowls with the carbs left on. He said work from the right as much as you can. Is this a good way to do the job? Does it help to put a mirror on the case to see what's going on above? Any tips on taking off the floats without screwing them up? I bought the bike used and the previous owner replaced the screws with allen head stainless, so I got that going for me. I don't really want to disassemble the back of the bike right now if it's not necessary.
Thanks in advance for the advice...

Get yourself a small 1/4" ratchet with a socket that will hld a phillip's bit from a screwgun or driver. Use this to break the screws loose. Far easier than droppin the carbs, the first time you remove them will be the hardest.

especially with the allen head screws, there is no need to pull the carbs to just re-jet. a mirror can help, as can a lift, so you can sit next to it. Taking the carbs off is no biggie either. after the boots and the connector for the TPS is off, the carbs will swing out to the left side without removing the cables.
have fun!

My first time, I figured I'd try to do it without removing the carbs. Eight screws and two jets. How hard could that be?

Big mistake! It turned a 1 hour project into a 6 hour project and an hour of shop time. I managed to strip 3 of the original float bowl screws (very easy to do), and then I stripped the head of the pilot jet, and broke off a chunk of the carb assembly (fortunately, a non-functional chunk).

Pull out the carbs (at least swing them sideways). You'll be happy you did. I regret not doing so, to the extent it would have improved my day immensely.

My 2 cents:

Use the 1/4" ratchet as suggested, and by all means use a mirror! Before you start, place an old hand towel or shop rag, etc. under the carbs and spread it out to catch anything you accidently drop. Turn off the fuel petcock and drain the fuel out of the float bowls on BOTH carbs.

The main jet screws into the needle jet holder. Watch in the mirror as you remove the main jet with a screwdriver or screwdriver bit in the 1/4" ratchet--if the needle jet holder starts to turn, stop and get a wrench to tighten it and hold it in place. If you remove the needle jet holder, the needle jet will fall out and it is not readily apparent which way is up on this little brass sleeve (needle jet). The needle jet only goes in correctlly one direction.

Since the previous owner replaced the phillips screws with the allen screws, most of the hard work for the first jet change has already been done...take your time and do one carb at a time and you should have very little problems.

Do as Redbird says ...leave them on .
remove the inside float bowl screws from the opposite side of the bike, much easier than reaching around.
you can also lay on the ground and look up after the bowls are off to see exactly where the main jets are (PROMINENT) .I've done this a few times and it was no problem.remember to use the wrench to hold the needle jet holder when removing the main jets.don't crank the jets on when installing ,just snug is fine.
