So I've been looking into getting a GPS this year and figured I'd see what receivers and mounts other people are using.
The Garmin Quest looks like it has everything I need for a reasonable price.
I'm also curious as to what kind of mounts are you using on your Bonneville and how you like it. Is there one that is secure but easy enough to remove when not in use.

I use a Garmin Streetpilot 2720, with Garmin Motorcycle Cradle Kit #010-10495-00, mounted with a RAM Mount Kit RAMB149Z-A. I already had the Streetpilot for use in my "Bonnie GXP", and got the accessories from gpscity.com on ebay for the stuff I needed to convert it for a bike..

I am not at all familiar with the Quest, but the features I like on my Streetpilot are its large touch screen, mph indicator, trip computer, headphones audio out, waterproof, and, oh yeah - I can put in routes. :-D

The Quest probably does all that, too.

Walt, I was looking at those RAM mounts. How do you like it? Is yours the U-bolt type mount? Do you find it sturdy enough? Is this enough questions?

I used to have a BMW F650 Dakar that I took off road a lot
it had a RAM mount with a U bolt mount on the handlebar, plenty sturdy for that application so it should be more than enough for a Bonnie

Yes it is a U-bolt mount to the bars. The u-bolt is available, I believe, in cadmium plated, stainless steel, or painted black. The bracket that holds the GPS is a Garmin part, and accepts a standard mounting plate as that offered by RamMount. Here's a link to the hardware at gpscity:

The other items I needed were the Garmin bracket that holds the GPS and fastens to the RamMount, and a motorcycle power cable, which is very different than the power cable used in my car.

I have a Quest and a Streetpilot III. They're both out of production but still available new and are supported by Garmin. Prices are comparable. I prefer the Streetpilot for the larger screen. The Streetpilot is on a Touratech (065-0039) cradle RAM mounted. http://www.cycoactive.com/gps/ttsp3.html

Touratechs are popular with the BMW GS crowd for semi-off-road use but the GPS is securely mounted and easily removed.
The SP has a removable memory chip, Quest has what's built in. SP uses replaceable AA's, Quest has a built-in battery. Both can be powered from the bike (I have the SP hardwired), the SP with any power cord if you have a power outlet, the Quest must get power through a powered mount.

During a trip through Canada, the Quest did lock up. Had to wait 2 days for the battery to run down and reset before getting home and finding out there is a soft-reset key sequence (in the instruction manual I didn't have with me at the time).

Surprised not to see half-dozen posts from guys saying they don't use GPS and you shouldn't either, sure they'll show up eventually :wink:

Thanks for all the info guys! I have decided to go for the Quest II. Got it yesterday. It has all the features I want and need.
JJ, I will be sure to memorize those reset codes before I go anywhere. :razz:

Those touratech mounts do look pretty cool, but also pretty fancy, and a little out of my price range. I'm gonna wind up going with a RAM mount.
