I got my K&N pod filters and started hacking the airbox per instructions from Tom Keith. Great instructions and pics - I don't think I have ever had such detailed pics to work from for any project. When you start taking the dremel to plastic you want to make sure you are doing the right thing. Fortunately I have a band saw to cut the outside pieces and this gives it a much cleaner look.

The scrambler is a little different on the right side given the high pipes and abbreviated side cover. But it will still work.

Next step is jetting. They re-jetted when the put on the pipes but they don't recall what they did (??). I think I will start with a 150 main, 42 pilot and Thruxton needles. So many different opinions (which is good) so I went with the calculator on the one site - don't recall name.

Bad news is that it will be in the mid 50's today and I can only watch my bike in the garage. Turning colder tomorrow so any field testing will probably need to wait.

The bike looks really cool with the K&N's exposed - I guess you could cut the side covers to expose more of them. Any one tried this? Any pics?

Thanks for passing along. I can tell you have different K&N pod filters - mine are longer and the mounting part is toward the top - not the center. I obviously had to hack out more plastic to make mine fit - which made mounting the exhaust side electrical and cover a little more difficult.

So based on your experience it looks like I should start with a 140 main?

Also, how do the Hyde's sound? I have on the TOR's but hate the big hunk of chrome they put over the muffler section. The Hyde's look a lot better.

tri650,

I have 140 mains which the operator said was a ba' hair rich at the top, over 6000rpm, not really worth changing to 135. But that's not where I run my bike anyway, the important thing is that the mid range is very strong and that was achieved on Thruxton needles with two shims (each)

A lot of figures you see quoted by folk on here for jets with pods are for Bonnies, T100, Thruxton etc. Our 865 270' motors have a mild inlet cam by comparison, it doesn't get as much gas in there at high revs compared with a 360' inlet cam or even a 790cc 270' cam.

What I've got will be a reasonable starting point for you, but the dyno' is the best place to make sure. The only thing that was changed after my runs was weakening the pilots a bit, the rest was what I'd installed by experiment. I did remove the shims at one stage for experiments sake and the mid range dropped right off, that might save you a bit of time.

Thanks for the tips - what do you mean by "weakening the pilots"?

'Weakening the pilots'.....

....by turning the pilot adjusting screws in, to bring the previously over-rich pilot mixture down to the correct A/F ratio. If you look at the chart on the linked thread you'll see that the setting I had was a bit rich to begin with. It's explained in more detail in the last post on the thread.
