What size jets are being used when goin to the Short TOR's?
How do you know when you have the right size installed other than to dyno the bike.
Both of mine run better after the A.I. removal and TOR's but both have different size jets. Both also have the problem of sometimes backfiring on startup, and popping on decel since the re-jet.

TORs aren't as open as most pipes from what i've gathered. But i'd probably start with 25 mains and one shim under the stock needles. Leave the pilots alone (they're fine even for highly modded bikes usually) but you can play with the pilot screws. I'd turn those out about 3 to 4 turns. That right there could fix the popping, tho for me it was just getting the overall jetting right. the way i see what works is to start with a jet i think should be about right, then if nothing much happens up them a size till i start noticing a lack of improvment or a noticable malady such as bogging or anything negitive. Then go back to the last size i had in it. Do that with mains, then once right do the needles.
It's a time consuming PITA taking the bowls and tops off a number of times. But if you want to do it yourself thats what has to be done.

Dinqua-
I'm such an idiot, that I couldn't factor in the data, or interpret your program. Sad, and sorry, as it appears to be incredibly efficacious.
So, I'm going from stock on my 04 America, to the short TORS.
What do I need (to tell the mechanic, sigh,) to do?
Much thanks, from a humble dweeb.

Hey Golfer,
Don't be so hard on yourself... All this jetting and terminology and, mainly, OPTIONS, can be confusing and frustrating.
Just open the carb idle mixture screws 1/4 turn each. If the popping continues, go another 1/4 turn. I'm sure that would fix it.
Also, check the plugs for overall condition. If they are pitted or speckled and look prematurely worn, it's running too lean. If they are coated in black, powdery carbon, it is too rich. You want the idle mixture correct first.
Then, if the plugs are still looking lean, you need a bigger jet, smaller needle and / or a shim (and just the opposite if too rich)....or in laymens terms....MORE ADVICE...which you will get here!

Oops.....i meant to say in the above post, "125 mains", not 25. By the way, the jetting calc says 124 with tors and all else stock, so the 125 would as i said before be about right. (125 is the closest available size to 124) And as needles go, they can alwqays use a shim, probably even on a stock bike. If it were me putting short tors on, i'd go 125 mains, one shim on the needles, a turn or 2 out on the pilot screws, and remove the snorkel. The latter will get you a considerable boost. I think that setup is a pretty safe bet and even if it wasn't optimal it wouldn't be off enough to see any negitive results at all.
By the way, while many seem to think the mains are the important jet, the needles are where the most important gains are found because they are in effect far more than the mains unless you ride like a madman constantly. Mains affect full throttle operation mainly, while ther needles take up the mid range where 90% of your riding is done. People who neglect the needles after opening up the intake and exaust are often suprised when they finally do get some more tapered needles or add shims bercause the midrange was starving for fue,l and once corrected a pretty healthy power jump is often felt.

Put your info into Pat's calculator:
Pipes: TOR, no modifications
Rest of bike stock - paper air filter, all snorkels in place.
Sea level - checked 1,000 to 2,000 (mean in MN is 1,200 according to Google)
Pilot Jet - 42 (stock)
You need to use: 123.5 main jets
I had long off road pipes and rejetted to 125's on Bellacorse' advice (before Pat's calculator), the bike ran like a champ.
Advice - at least pull all of your snorkels, top and inner (free, 5 minutes of work. Than Pat's calculator says to use 126.5 mains.
Paper vs. UNI or K&N filter doesn't change the results, but I'd install one of them at your next go around. In fact, I'm doing the homemade Freak soon. I'll sell my Uni filter dirt cheap if you are interested. Say $15 plus shipping?

Just for the record, I'd like to let those of you who are interested the outcome of my mods done yesterday. Basically my 05 speedmaster really goes now. I mean really really goes cos the acceleration is just brilliant compared to before. So according to Dinquas jet calculator I did the following:
I already had longs slash cut tors where no jetting had been done yet so then I then drilled the bottom of the air box, removed the snorkel, put in a uni filter and drilled the bottom of it, changed needles from stock to tbs with one shim, put in 126 jets, removed A1 and finally changed to iridium plugs.
I still don't know if my bike's running rich or lean but with the way she is going, it has to be good surely. By the way, I haven't changed the idle mixture screw settings yet cos of the way the bike is running but can I have some opinions on this. Reading other threads it appears to majority have turned theirs out 3 or even sometimes 4 turns. Here's a photo of my bike stripped a little for the mods.

Hey Firie9
Going to do exactly the same when the missus gets over me buying the bike in the first place.
Thanks for the info. Just where did you get the bike stand though, gotta get one of those!

Hey Firie9,
if you think it really goes now, try opening the vacuum holes in the slides to 3mm. Huge throttle response difference at no cost!
nice pix too!
