I am riding mostly on twisty mountain roads and doing so with some agressivity I want to do some mods on the Bonnie stock suspension. But I am concerned with $$, so I want to proceed gradually and first I'd like to know if some of you have experienced sporty riding with a thicker Fork oil grade. What's the difference with the 10w we have as stock. 15 or 20?
Thanks you all ;-)

I went to the 20 W when I changed my front springs and fork seals. I think that the most cost effective mod for serious twisties would be to go to Progressive springs and better fork oil followed by new rear shocks and springs. As to what weight oil, I think that depends on your weight. 20 W works for me but my boarding weight is 215 and we do a lot of 2 up riding.

Thanks Chuck. I am going to work on this now. I will be riding more duo hopefully. I am taking the wife for her first mountain road ride today! we've been married ...for 16 years ;-) Feels like I am taking a test...

Hi,
I am 250lbs and my wife is half that Found that Progressive's springs improved the front beyond recognition and that was keeping the standard'10' oil. Next thing was to put progressive 412 shocks with HD springs on the rear (i went for the thruxton length 20mm longer) totally transformed the bike, it loves corners and is a real pleasure to ride. the only prob is that the good lady enjoys it so much I am seldom able to go solo! no bad thing IMHO

Hey Petjamrut,

were did you buy your progressive 412HD? Online by any chance? How did you get to specify the extra 20mm Thruxton style? Then what does the extra length add to it?
Even if my wife let's me ride on my own most of the time, I am concerned with a good compromise between agressive solo ride w/ lots of cornering and some duo ( I am 160lb and wife is about the same).
Thanks man :-)

I'm very close to your weight, swmbo is about 35/40lbs lighter. I installed ikon progressives in the front and ikon's in the rear. 15 weight oil, while the bike feel's good with both of us on it I think I'm going back to 10 weight.

The front end is a little choppy when riding solo. The progressive springs really made a difference in the frontend.

I just ordered the Hagon Progressive springs today and after talking to TJ at Brea Socal Triumph -our best dealership here in the LA area- I will probably stick to the 10w and see. I am now looking for a decent pair of shocks as the stock feels too bouncy/shaky. Progressive 412HD? Need more info on that ;-)
Again whether I ride real sporty when solo and when riding duo I hope for more bike stability and progressivity in the response. Specially when cornering on the mountain and canyon roads.
Thanks so much for present and future posts. Yes this forum is Ze source!!!

Torquenm--I'd be interested in exactly what info the tech at Brea gave you about the Hagons and fork oil. When I switched to the Hagons, I got them from Bellacorse and the recommendation was to switch to 20wt. I did that, but have considered going down to 15wt. I don't know if the recommendation on the fork oil was from RaceDweeb or directly from Hagon. In any case, the improvement, especially in front end dive, was amazing, but I still wonder if the 20wt oil is a bit much.

I ordered a set of Hagon springs from Dave Quinn and he recommended 20wt as well so there's some accountability there. I'll probably go with that and see how it feels, it's easy enough to change if it's too heavy

hi torquenm
Ordered the prog springs through www.bike-revival.co.uk here in the UK. Had to wait for them to come in but if you are in the states then your wait should be shorter. Steve at Bike revival certainly knows his biz. There were a few probs getting a spring to fit with the hepco jun 30 panniers as the clearance is tight (Hagon Nitro's my original choice would not fit) but revival sorted out Progressive 412 with uprated springs (note the HD range with full length covers also have clearance probs). The shock ref is 412-4226c which is for the Goldwing but the spring rating is 120/170 which is lighter than the Goldwing but heavier than the std bonnie/thrux.
All I can say it is brilliant and that bike revival have been great. She really loves cornering, almost could say that she falls into them so cornering is a dream. I certainly feel a lot more sure footed now that the wallow and scrape have gone. I am 6'4" and 285lb and swmbo is 155lb Even two up ther is no noticable difference in handling. You will need to get 2 extra bush liners (metal sleeves) as the kit for the goldwing only has 2, whereas you need 4. But prog will supply these at no extra charge with you order. likewise the kit has 4 big spacer washer for the top mount, these are not needed.

Hope this helps and good luck. best money I have spent on her yet! let us know how you get on.
