As I read more postings and books, I'm getting the idea to start tinkering on my bike. What are the purposes for the various mods? my goals are really to increase the horsepower of my bike.

More horsepower
Self satisfaction @ having accomplished something previously thought undoable
Individualism
Or the ole favorite....a reason to retreat from the S.O., onto unhallowed ground.....or, in laymans' terms..... turn on some tunes and bust some knuckles in the garage!
That's 4 that I can think of....not necessarilly in that order, and there are probably more......
I think Individualism is my answer....I want MY bike to do what I want it to, HOW I want it to, When I want it to...
For now, a quest for a "gel" seat might complete my wants....but I can't find a listing for a "gel" seat for a Bonneville.....at least not a listing that specifies "gel."
Infectious.....did I forget to mention that all the talk about mods is subliminally infectious too....

to make it sexier, louder, faster, and like Kliff said, to make it my own!
It's MY bike, and if I parked it in a crowd of 1,000 black bonnevilles I could find it in a second.

I like working on bikes.
I also like a better stronger running bike.
I have not done much to the bonneville, AI removed, dynojet kit installed, the PO had fit TOR's, I removed the snorkle and installed an 18 tooth sprocket.
Repairs included fixing an oil leak at the sprocket, and correcting many problems the shop left (loose bits, hoses off, etc.
Other then more comfortable handlebars, I dont think I will do much more.

We modify our bikes to increase performance....ie, I want it to go when I say go and accelerate when I give it the throttle. Also, bonding....quality garage time, etc...you know..

Because I have thousands of dollars worth of tools in the garage, and it would be a shame to waste them...

Because it gives you something else to do with your new toy when it's raining and it's already polished to with within an inch of it's life and the wife is saying " What else can you find to do with the blessed thing?"

All great reasons. It's almost like the Bonnies were made to be modified. A lump of clay waiting to be molded.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, modify it.

It's my way of stimulating the economy, one paycheck at a time. Also, I am living proof of the truth in the expression: A fool and his money are soon parted.
