Give us a little more description of the problem, please. The "vent" or overflow hose should be pretty well held in place by ty-raps, etc....have you removed yours for some reason. The hose basically goes from the tank over and behind the carbs to the "tip over" valve that should be held in a vertical position on the frame behind the carbs, and from the tip over valve it continues down behind the engine and kinda hangs out with the drain hose from the airbox. When I remove my tank, I remove the overflow/vent hose without ever looking at it and replace it the same way--it's much easier for me to feel where it goes while standing up than to squat down and then try to get my feeble hands in the tight space to do anything. :-D

okay so here is the whole problem:
I installed an AI kit and removed all the california emissions stuff, when i did that i guess i wasn't paying attention and pulled the entire fuel vent hose out as well. I capped off all the valves as per the AI install instructions and then capped off the valves that were left over from removing the emissions system, i ran a 5/16 hose with a little bit of filter material from the bar inbetween the carbs, so the bowls will float, and i fust plugged a hose up to the gas tank vent and ran it along the clamps on the frame back behind the carbs.
Now the bike wont start unless i crank it forever and i have to hold it atleast at 1/2 throttle to keep it going, at the same time black smoke is pouring out the exhaust.
any help would be great

Daryl,
Sorry, I can't be of more help...the CA emissions stuff is outta my league. The fuel tank/vent hose runs basically as I said before. I have read where someone got into trouble "plugging off" all the stuff removed from the CA emissions...do some searches to see if you can find some old threads. Also, send GaryD a pm if you can use that feature--not sure since you are a "Newbie". GaryD lives in Arkansas, but bought a CA equipped '03 bonnie and wrote a report on removing that stuff.
I suspect you are flooding the engine with fuel. On my carbs, the fuel inlet is to a "T" connector between the carbs kinda at the back and low on the carbs. At the top and near the front of the carbs is a black plastic looking connection between the carbs and the "T" connection is facing downward--nothing attached to it. I assume this plastic looking "T" connector is the one you connected the 5/16 hose to. I would suggest removing that hose and seeing what it does as far as running. I also suggest you be VERY careful...if you are flooding the engine with fuel, you could easily cause the carbs to dump some on top of the engine case.
You also need to remove the air filter from the airbox and check to make sure you haven't collected a bunch of fuel in the airbox. The airbox should drain--it's the larger drain hose sticking down behind the engine case; however, sometimes it can get blocked.
Good luck,
Larry
PS. Where are all you CA guys...Daryl needs some help.

Hi Daryl, welcome to the site.
To be honest, I'm not that familiar with the CA emissions gubbins, but what the heck.
Are you certain you fitted the vacuum nipple cover absolutely securely over the vent on the left side inlet manifold?
Hmmm... mind you, that wouldn't account for the black smoke - would it. Okay... are you certain the 5/16 hose you used was suitable for routing petrol and totally clean (ie. free of rubber deposits)?

Your problem might be that the hose that you connected the carb filter is kinked thus restricting the air. First of remove the hose and filter from the carb connecting rail, route the tank breather pipe down behind the batt box so it hangs just by the center stand mount. (also ensure that you remove the one way valve that is in the breather pipe line) you can get a small filter from a model shop to put on the rail.
best of luck.
hope it works.

Just curious while on this thread... somebody mentioned that cutting the gas tank vent hose at the bottom on an angle instead of the stock straight cut, seemed to solve his dead bonnie in the rain scenario. Has anyone else tried this at all?
thanks Ken

alright i got it all figured out i made an awesome looking breather for the carbs, using a little of the 5/16 tubing and one of the valves from the SAIS that i had left over, and a mooneyes engine breather. ill post pics soon, it looks really cool.
thanks for all the help!
