I am shopping for late model Triumphs, and I want to know which has more touring abilitiy - within reason on this one - I'm not going to be doing ironbutt, but I do want to do some longer rides - either alone or two up.
I like the looks of both bikes, but I want to purchase the right one. I had a Tbird before, and it was mediocre for longer rides.
opinions?

Neither, it's personal choice.
The current offerings are different in the following ways..
america has wider taller bars, sm has drag bars. America has no tach, sm does. America has single front disc, sm has dual. America has spAmerica's pipes are slash cut, sm's are bullet end. America's 790 cc engine has more HP, sm's 865 cc engine has less HP but more torque. paint jobs are differnt. Other than that they are the same bike. The HP/torque differnce is due to differnt cam profiles.
However, when the 07's come out a LOT of things have been changed so they are far closer and now mainly cosmetic. The even share the exact same engine.

Will the 865cc do me well for longer rides? I like the America better, BTW.
I don't want to get on the hwy and have less juice than I should for passing, etc.

Yep, like i said it's a matter of taste. Theres nothing about either thats going to make an difference worth going with and passing on the one you really like. If you like the america, get it. Just remember that if you go with a 06 the differences will be VERY different. Go to the triumph site and look at the bikes, then go to the SWISS triumph site and you'll see the new 07 speedy and america and you'll see they have the same engine in 07 and the cosmetics have changed drasically so it's even more subjective. I think the america looks a lot better in 07. You may thing so too, so it could influence you on whether you wanna buy now or wait till the 07's hit the showroom floors.

I just looked at the 07 site and except for the brakes they are the same bike. Can't see the wheels as well as I would like in the pictures though.
Is the cost for the 07's less as well?
what happened to the 'fuel injection for 07' ?
interesting

Actually there are differences besides the brakes....
wheels are different
pipes are different (they swapped america and speedy pipes !)
america has no tach
america has chrome side covers
different seats
different bars...sm=drag bars, america regular bars.
different front fenders
But yeah, theres still a lot more thats now the same. What really puzzles me is why they put the sm's bullet end pipes on the america and the america pipes on the sm ! Not that it's necassarily god or bad, just odd that at first they saw fit to do it one way, then changed it.

All these people are talking crazy here! The speedmaster is better case closed. I'm not sure there is anything else else worth saying on the subject!
