Is there a mileage recomendation on when to do the valves or is there an easy way to tell it's time?

12,000 miles.

You have to pull the valve cover gasket to check the lash. Seems like most people have a valve or 2 out of spec, or are ok. I have 10,000 miles on mine I'll check it soon.

The service interval is now 12,000 miles or 20,000km. I checked mine quite easy to check and found that all were a little over. I will check again in another 5,000 km or so.
A little over is OK only noisy tight is not good as it will stop valves sealing and if left long enough burn valves. Too loose will accelerate wear on valve train.

Doing the check is really easy. At 10K miles all were in spec.

I have over 22,000 on mine and still all 8 valves are within specs. I will check again at 24,000 because I know I should be getting very close.

Would a noticeable ticking sound indicate a loose valve? Its been weighing on my mind a bit. I'm only at 7700 miles.

I think it will have a noticable sound no matter what. These engines have noisy valves.

You can always pull the valve cover and check it. That's a simple task.

Check the valves while dead cold. Like over night or longer. I say longer because you may be coming in at 2:30 AM & getting up early to check them. I know the two don't go together.

I did my 12,000-mile valve check a month or so ago, and 6 of the 8 valves were within spec. The other two were out of spec by such a tiny amount that I didn't go to the trouble of adjusting them. I'll just check them again in another few thousand miles.
