I spent a while trying to figure out if it was the wiring, etc, because it was intermittant. I even pulled the switch and tested it with a VOM for quite a few clicks...looked ok.

Finally broke down and ordered a new one for all of 16+ bucks. No longer intermittant.

The point here is that, yes, the switch can go out. Test your brake light.

Any switch exposed to the weather can go.
WD40 usualy fixes them though...
