Okay, I've been reading this forum for almost a year now and was content to be "cool by association" until I actually got my bike this month. Now I'm experiencing it all for myself and many things are different from the way I saw or heard them in my mind as I read about them.

1) Noisy tranny (and no, I don't mean the cross-dresser next door with the big mouth and loud music). I thought everyone just meant that it clunks into gear, but I hear the continual spinning of the gears as I ride. Normal?

2) Engine coughs (just once) when I shut her down.

3) I hear an electrical buzzing when I apply the brakes.

I'm thinking it's all the normal characteristics of the bike. Since I'm riding alone I am actually awake, alert, and listening, unlike when I am driving along in my car with my wife next to me chattering away. Can anyone say "spouse-induced coma?"

G'day,

Congrats on the best choice of a bike.

The top-end noise appears to be normal but I've found that a full-face helmet gets rid of most of it. My brakes also made noise when the bike was new but stopped (making noise) by the first service. 12,000 miles later on my 06 T100 and it gets better 'n' better all the time.

Ride safe and hope to see you around MD.

The primary drive (between engine and trans) is gears, which is most of the noise you hear most likely.
Its normal and there is nothing to be done about it.
The top end also makes noise, the motor is designed to have the cams ride right on the head (no bearings), and the valves also make noise.
Since its air cooled, the motor uses loose fitting parts to allow for thermal expansion, the lack of a water jacket allows the noise to radiate out the cooling fins.

The transmission also clunks, maybe because the shock loading is built into the back wheel, I dont think there is any shock absorbing gizmos built into the clutch or primary drive.

The old bikes had a chain drive primary, and had shock absorbing rubbers built into the clutch, which made things much quieter.

What you have to watch out for is a CHANGE in the noise, that would point to something needing attention.

Stock the exhaust is REAL quiet, which allows you to hear the noise all that much more.

My brakes dont make any noise, but maybe they did when the bike was new.

Brett

#1 the "break-in" oil is pretty thin, hence EVERYTHING in the engine is noisey. But being an air cooled engine, it will never really be quiet.....heavier synthetic oil will help. I like 15w50 Mobil1( OIL WARS!)

#2 install an AI kit. You just heard an exhaust pulse, rich with fuel when shut down, ignite due to an injection of air....that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

#3 like da man said...at around 500 miles or so, the brake noises start disappearing.....just the pads "bedding in," actually a good thing. Brakes that "bed in in the first 5 minutes, usually don't last long.....

I had all those same noises. The drilled front rotor causes the buzzing. Reassuring to me. The primary drive is gears. Straight cut I assume. It will quit down some. Normal. I also have a kick back noise when shutting down. It is the engine kicking back & hitting the starter clutch. Also remove the air injection. We all do.
Get some loud exhaust & it will all go away.

Just as I thought, thanks. Lots of advice to get louder pipes. Might try the same on the car to drown out the passenger.

Besides the loud pipes, you also "need" a starcom1 communications system so you can listen to your MP3 player or other source of musical noise...this would also work in your car, but you would have to wear the helmet and your source of noise might get upset...but you could always buy her a helmet...no that wouldn't work because the helmet to helmet communications is always active. :-D Loud pipes saves wives!
