When one of our forum members has what appears to be a carburetion problem, I don't think I can recall seeing any solutions that recommend checking the fuel level in the floats. Every possible jetting solution is proposed. I've noticed that bikes equipped with identical or nearly identical jetting and exhaust as mine exhibit really bad operating characteristics, while mine is running perfectly.

This makes me wonder if, during the initial rejetting process, particularly float bowl replacement, the floats on some of the bikes are disturbed enough to cause fuel levels to be off? Maybe the float tangs have been bent, etc?? Especially on bikes that are rejetted with the carbs left on the bikes?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? It may be a blind alley, but ............

Good idea...when I re-jetted I had ahellova time putting the bottoms back on...then I realized that the float tangs were sticking out alittle...when put back in so the hinge worked...everything snapped back on just fine. I did re-jet with the carbs on and tilted at a 90 degree angle and thats how those darn tangs slipped out alittle.

Good point I had forgotten that I lowered mine 1mm on the advice of dyno operator (to lean out a bit mid range) after the second dyno. Both were at factory spec 17mm haynes say 16-18 mm. I might go another 1 mm lower.
Definitely worthhile checking if your having problems.
Much easier with carbies off which is not easy with stock mairbox.

This is most critical, because if your float/fuel levels are incorrect or inconsistant from carb to carb - all your time spent jetting was really for nothing. A very good point to keep in mind. JCW

Ha, funny that this topic should come up.
I was just mentioning to my Dad that I was thinking about rejetting the Scrambler because I thought it was lean as received from the factory.
Then Dad starts going on about "back in the day, we used to adjust the float to make her a little richer or leaner." :???:

Checking fuel level looks like a no-brainer, based on the instructions in the Haynes Manual. Doesn't require removing float bowls, unless the level is off and the float tangs have to be adjusted.
