I am looking at two used SM's for sale. I am going to purchase one of them and wondering what the better deal/year is.

1. '03 SM "mint" condition. Only 800 miles! Original owner. No engine mods. Original pipes. Leather saddlebags and summer windshield. He said it could be on a showroom. A couple other minor bolt-ons.

2. '04 SM "very good" condition. 5,000 miles. Second owner, "Off-road shortie" pipes, airbox mods, extra seat, fabric saddlebags, LED rear brake llights, aftermarket front signals mounted to forks, and bobbed fenders.

-The '03 is about $500 more, but only 800 miles.
-How much are the airbox mods and pipes worth on the '04?
-Are there any difference/advantage in the years?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. I am new to the Triumph community and am very excited.

Thanks, Pokey

G'day Mate,

Personally I would go with the 03, less miles is the key here. Talk him down $500 and you are much better off in my opinion. Not sure about the total cost of the mods you are talking about however there is no performance difference between the 03 and 04

I agree. I'd take the bike with 800 because this way you can be more sure the bike will be babied during it's breakin period. The other bike has another 4.2k of riding that you didn't have control over. Thats just the way i look at it, but thats what i'd do. As for pipes, they can be anywhere from a couple hundred or less for used or generic pipes to 7 or 8 hundred for thunderbikes or staintunes or a few others at the top end of the price spectrum. But this way you will not only be able to pick the pipes you like best, but have the stock pipes in case you need them again to pass a emissions test or whatever. For me milage is paramount, especially with bikes which don't last as long as cars.

By the way, what are they asking? You may be paying enough to get a new one or at least close. I've seen them go new for as little as about $7.8k out the door. depends on where you're located and how many dealers are near. (competition)

Sorry to disagree, but I would go for #2 if it looked OK.

I would not be too concerned about the extra miles as the bike is almost bullet proof. So he hit the speed limiter a few times, mine hits the limiter every ride and no ill effects to the bike.

Also you will likely end up buying the extras anyway, if you don't want them sell them on e-bay and reduce the price even more.

IMHO, both will be good buys, it's about what you want...

Thanks for the advice, Gents. Price: 5.5K for the '04 and 6K for the '03. I think they are pretty good prices for both of them...correct me if I am wrong. I think I would be more comfortable buying the '03, but I am leaning toward the '04 just because it is about 4 hours less driving distance (I would be driving about 14 hours total (there and back) for the '03. I plan on picking one of them up this saturday. I will let you know what the outcome is.

Thats from looking at cycle trader which lists prices all over the country on used and new bikes with a lot of dealers. I may be off, but there are some places selling very very cheap. Here in Ca we pay top dollar compared to many other states. Some dealers like that Chatanooga (sp?) dealer sell way cheaper.
