Is it normal to have some valve (noise) ticking with a 04 Speedmaster? Pretty much with the stock pipes...the only thing you could hear was the valves ticking! :???:

Yes, its very normal. The tappet noise you here is the from the cams rolling over the valve shims. As they are very high on the engine and covered with thin cam cover you will always here it.

Generally it gets a bit louder when the bike is really hot. The noise itself doesn't mean your shims are out.

I hate it, but it's normal as they said already. I was wondering if it could be subdued by having the inside of the cam cover coated in some sort of rubberized coating, that is if theres anything that would be impervious to heat and assuming it wouldn't cause overheating. I heard HD or some other brand uses some sort of insulation for that. It's one of my few major dislikes about the bike. luckily tho i use ear plugs most all the time for wind noise mainly, so i only really hear the pipes. I'd ride w/o them tho during slow city riding occasionally if not for the valve noise. But pulling away from a stop, especially uphill actually sounds embarassing ! Like a bucket of bolts strapped to the back of a bucking bronco. :-D

I really wish triumph would redesign it somehow and add EFI so that it's quiet and has about 10 more HP. I'd trade mine in tomorrow.

It's all part of the unique character of the bike.
My Speedmaster runs like a top. A darn fast top. :-D

Normal Triumph sound.
And, it should subside a little as it warms up, since the valves heat up and everything expands, if it gets louder, you may need valve adjustments.
If you live in hot areas, using 20-50 oil helps some too with the noise.
I don't worry about it at all. I've had it apart many times and nothing is worn.

That is a big relief! I was getting worried about the noise.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

How many miles on it? I just did my 12,000 mile valve adjustment and its quieter than its ever been. Had 4 too loose. Still makes noise, just not as much.
