I just ordered tires and the metzler that the manual shows as the rear is 170/80H-15 while the order i placed shows the rear as 170/80HB-15. Anyone know what that extra "B" is for? I'm thinking maybe "blackwall" or some such thing, while the "H" is an actual generic designation for some aspect of the tire size.

Hey daz.
I am pretty sure that the "H" designation in the manual is just the "conventional" tire sizing - H15.
After much fannying around on the Metzler site, I have determined that the "B" code preceding the tire diameter is in fact the construction code. According to [THIS] .PDF file of their 2006 tire range, the "B" construction code means "BIAS BELTED".
Bias Belted tires are constructed with a conventional carcass and a belt made of one or more crossed layers. The difference between carcass and belt is given by the different goals that they have to fulfil and consequently the different materials that are used: the belt is mainly made by Nylon and has to reduce the dynamic deformation due to the centrifugal forces, while the carcass has to mainly give the tire its contour.
You can read a lot more on the tire markings [HERE] daz.

170/80HB-15
170: Width in MM at the widest point.
80: Ratio of height to width, i.e it's 80% as high as it is wide 170*.80=136mm
H: Speed rating, I believe H is up to 114mph
B: Construction, B=Bias, R=Radial
15: Diameter of rim.

Ok, so the B is for bias belted. I looked at the original tire and it does have a B in it, but it's not arranged the same. It says "170/80 B15 m/c 77H".
The m/c of course means motorcycle but what is the 77 and does the B mean the same thing even tho it the H and B are not together and right after the 170/80? i just want to determine id the tire i bought is exactly the same or if they changes the plys somehow. Come to think of it, it did mention the plys on the tire but i don't recall if it mentioned steel, but it did mention nylon. Soulda brought a pencil out cuz it was all i could to to remember the tire size and rating specs.

Ahh....i see the 77 is the load index code and the B should be just asyou guys said no matter where it's located. it's just that ther arrange all these codes differently in the string on the tire then they do on paper.
Thanks all. now i can't wait to get them on and be over with all this. should have em by the weekend if the place is as fast as they say they are.

Speaking of Metzelers, do they make a whitewall for the Speedmaster? Maybe that's too over the top?

i think they do. When i was looking at them one of the sites showed a whitewall option, tho i don't know which tires that are offered with that. maybe all, maybe a few. Go to metzler's site and you should be able to find out for sure and email them if need be. I don't want whitewalls, but i sure wish they offered the white lettering like dunlop does. that looks very slick.

Redlines would look sweet on a black speedmaster. Don't know if anyone makes redlines for bikes (they were standard equipment on some of the old Triumph four wheelers, i.e. cars.)
