Most bell mouths are fitted direct to the carb to smooth out the air flow, if the bell mouth is fitted before the air filter element, what does it do? do you need less turbulent air before it goes through the filter?
Has anyone measured the power output before & after?

Dickie,

It’s an interesting question, I have been thinking of opening up for the air to get some more torque. Don’t know if I should take away the snorkel or put in a NARK. I know people who have cut the snorkel and they have to increase the main jets so I suppose there is some gain there. The bellmouth is just a nice way of keeping the filter in place, I think.

Come on..... do you think after giving up $125.00 for a NH bellmouth, that I would claim it doesn't work?!?!?

Well...., yeah, it works........ kinda.

Tell ya what, when the packing of my D&D cans was blown out, and I stuck the bellmouth on that night and went for a ride...... OHMYGOD!!!! That Bonnie of mine scooted up from freeway speeds (55-65) to an indicated 115 mph LIKE IT NEVER SCOOTED BEFORE! I was VERY impressed!

- But then I had to go & mess with it -

I repacked the D&D's and found out that I just killed my performance from the night before..... danm. So anyway, a long road traveled since then, more changes, different pipes, different jetting...... BUT THE BELLMOUTH STAYS!

Call it suggestive, call it big spender's justification, but don't call it 'cheap'...... I for one, think it WORKS! And though it won't give the performance returns of a NARK, it's a quick & easy installation, that MAY or MAY NOT give you the sort of instant gratification I got that night I first took it out for a test spin.....

Edited to include:
I believe the 130 mains I was sporting were a bit rich. Between the combination of less back-pressure and INSTANTLY & OBVIOUSLY more air via the newly installed NH bellmouth, the 130's came into their own that night. When I repacked the cans...... danm system became too rich again and I lost the git up & go I had the night before (at top end.... but the mid-range was STRONG!) Anyway, that's MY theory......

I noticed a huge difference on the butt-dyno when I pulled the snorkel. I didn't notice any difference at all when I put the NH Bellmouth in. The stock cover without the snorkel seems to work about the same as the NH Bellmouth.

I don't think I really noticed a difference either but hey, it's cool looking and I get some gratification knowing I have a "velocity stack" (even if hidden under the cover) on my bad motorscooter. Thats how I rationalize it to myself. I convinced she who holds the coin purse that it doubled my horsepower and made the seat more comfortable.

I've pulled the snorkel, fitted thruxton needles & TORS, and it runs much better, pulls better all round
I think the next mod may be the air filter?

I have a project bike I'll be putting together soon. I plan to keep that second baffle or divider plate in the air box on this one. I'm thinking that between the bellmouth & K&N, I'll get improved air flow and let the factory designed plate divide it up between the two carburetors. I have no idea what the plate looks like, but I wonder if those holes are large enough to accept the Polaris bellmouth pieces.....(?) You know, a couple little velocity stacks and a big velocity stack!

Anyway..... all it took was a ride that night with the blown out D&D's and newly installed bellmouth to convince me that my hun'erd dolla NH bellmouth did something.

Yeah, I know the NARK is supposed to be the bomb, but I choose to draw the line short of ANOTHER $400.00 mod and removing the side covers to take full advantage of them. It's a 60 horsepower 60's technology motorbike fergodsakes; a guy just has to know his limit$.......
