Your familiar sarcasm is duly noted. But being the humble guy I am, I'll put it out there: can someone give me a legitimate answer as to why my way of doing it is wrong? Other than "that's not how I do it." I'd love to learn something.

If I leave my idle adjustment alone, it won't run well until its completely warmed up. It idles around 400 rpms. But I don't like to leave the choke on longer than :30 seconds - 1 minute. It's way too rich. And driving in 40°F weather, it's not warmed up for a good 15 minutes or so of riding. I can clearly hear from the idle when it smoothes out nicely, after about 30 seconds, when the choke is no longer needed.

BTW to my knowledge EFI bikes don't have anything to compare to a choke. Your fast idle compares to our idle adjustment, but the choke is unique to the carbs.

yea .. choke works fine. I gradually push it in as she warms up. OOp.. that didn't sound right.

No sarcasm intended (that time), I guess there's nothing wrong with what you are doing it just sounds like a bit of a faff, also you are in a different situation to me as you have a carb' bike, on my EFi the 'choke' only lifts the idle no alters the mixture, can't you just "push it (the choke) in slowly until she warms up" as Dave suggested?

Hahaha, good one... Dunno about the way others do it, but my choke's either on or off. Finding a halfway position would take more finessing than a quick twist o' the idle adjuster knob. It just works well for me and I always assumed that's what the idle adjuster was for (the way I use it) since it's so easily accessible.

Now I've changed carbs and have to learn all over again how to even start the temperamental beast!

I just use my fast idle all the way out to start it. Then push it in half way to help warm it up.then push it all the way in after getting up to speed. EFI bike.

Found a solution, see below****How do you guys set your idle without a tach? I just set it by ear but I'm really not sure what RPMs I'm at to be honest.
